Last week a G-friend from Texas and our families went to Talledga National Forest in Alabama. The weather was beautiful and the company and picnic was great. This is the same trail taken with the MB Club activities in 2018. The trail has finally been maintained and the ruts repaired so the trail is still technical but fun. This trail information has also been posted earlier on this forum.

Oracle to Mammoth, AZ

Tooled around today on a trail known as the Tucson Wash that runs from Oracle to Mammoth, AZ, both originally mining towns. Mostly easy stuff. Some neat canyons, a cool old trestle bridge, awesome views of snow-capped mountains in the distance, and chimichangas topped with enchilada sauce (my favorite style) at La Casita in Mammoth!
Portland to Tucson

Drove down to Tucson last week. We decided to do some camping along the way. A bit frosty for the most part given the middle of January, but we didn't freeze.

Took the I-84 out through Oregon into Idaho and picked out a spot at City of Rocks. We were the only campers there so it was nice. Snowing and blowing all night, but the temps never dipped below 22 deg F. Beautiful location, we are definitely going back come summer time. The road out was a county road that dropped into Utah with up to 2" snow on it and occasional ranch truck tracks to boost our confidence in the route

New Mexico G Treffen and Europa meet

Gents, my apologies for the late notice here on P3. Hopefully some of you who may not know about the up comming NM G Treffen can still free up some time and make on such short notice.

2016 New Mexico G Treffen
October 2 – 8

William McBride cell – 505-780-0727 – email – 1wmcbride1@gmail.com
James Opel Cell – 505-453-5510 – email – jimbojimjames@gmail.com

Sunday, October 2nd – noon – Meet and Greet lunch at OCD (Marc Beyer’s and Francis Sayre’s shop) in Santa Fe – hang out, eat, drink, check out bunch of cool G’s, meet a bunch of the Europa guys.

OCD is located at 1315 Rufina Circle, Santa Fe NM, 87507

Sunday afternoon– after the OCD party head to camp at a remote private site on an old Indian Pueblo about 20 miles south of Santa Fe – hot showers – porta potties (new and clean) - party patio seats 60 – Mexican style “disco” dinner prepared by Charlie and Jose – drinking by a bonfire… I’ll provide a separate set of directions from OCD to the Pueblo Camp.

Monday, October 3rd – Breakfast burritos (we’ll have enough for everyone to make one for lunch) - Follow Rich Romero to the Bonanza Creek Ranch Movie sets for a private tour - Monday afternoon will allow plenty of time for people to get supplies for the backcountry trip, gas up etc - return to the pueblo for dinner (Charlie and Jose) - hang out – take G pics - drink - make G videos using drones - drink some more…

The Backcountry Adventure

Stock your own food, beverages, camping gear etc. I’ll be bringing the disco (giant wok that’ll cook for 40) so anybody can use it to cook. If anybody needs or forgets any gear just let us know, James and I have tons of gear. We’ll have fuel stops along the route as needed; suitably spaced for the range of a stock G. Scenery will be diverse and epic. With the exception of one section on the first day the roads will be maintained gravel.

For those who might be joining us along the route just let me know what day/time you will be arriving and we will arrange a time/location for a rendezvous with the group. The same goes for departures.

Tuesday, October 4th – Breakfast Burritos (different flavor than before with enough for us to pack a lunch) – pack up and hit the trail - We should shoot for a 10:30 departure – head down the Old La Bajada road and lift some wheels, take the dome road thru the Jemez and camp by the El Rito de Las Vacas (streambath!) – I usually do this route in about 4 hours but with a group it’ll probably be 5 ½ - 6 hours. The day will be around 25% asphalt, 75% dirt. Camp #1 is essentially about 50 miles WNW of Santa Fe as the crow flies. This day would be a good one for people who just want a daytrip and then return to Santa Fe for the evening.

Wednesday, October 5th – hit the road – gas up in Cuba, NM - head WSW into the Rio Puerco badlands – see a bunch of 800’ volcanic plugs, stop for lunch at an Anasazi kiva atop a 300’ spire – cross Mt Taylor – gas up in Grants, NM - continue South to camp #2 in the Sawtooth Mountains by Datil, NM. This is a dry camp in a very beautiful location. This day will be about 25% asphalt, 75% dirt and will be the longest day of driving – 6 - 7 hours depending on our pace so we should hit the road by 10am.

Thursday, October 6th – hit the road – top off gas in Datil, NM, head east into the Plains of San Augustine, turn south at the Very Large Array (worlds largest radio telescope) and head into the Gila National Forest. Camp #3 will either be at Snow Lake or along Willow Creek. We’ll make that call as the trip gets closer – dependent on the flow of the creek and whether we want sun or shade. This day will be about 20% asphalt, 80% dirt. Drive time will be about 3 ½ - 4 hrs. hours. There is a small store at the gas station in Datil that has very basic groceries – canned goods, bread, fresh local beef, onions, lettuce, booze, ice, chips – that’s about it.

Friday, October 7th – Layover Day – we’ll bury some meat on Thursday night – Umu style (wrapped in banana leaves) – dig it up and eat it for Friday brunch – it’ll be enough for lunch and dinner for everyone. This site is about 45 miles (as the crow flies) from the AZ border and within an hour and a half of the pavement between Glenwood and Reserve (the SW quadrant of NM). Once you hit the pavement you can go left and it takes you south towards I-10 and right takes you north towards I-40. This exit from the camp takes you down the epic road thru Mogollon, NM.

Saturday, October 8th – start making our way home. James and I might linger for another day in the Gila area as we have a hall pass thru Sunday. Another day of camping is a good day.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta – the largest hot air balloon gathering in the world runs October 1 – 9.
