Help needed trouble shooting K40 relay on a 1996 E320

Greetings everyone,

My neighbor has a 1996 E320 sedan that he has asked for some help with. It seems it has been intermittently and suddenly dieing while driving. No stumbling to a stall, just suddenly no more engine. Attempting to restart the engine would be met with starter but no fire. Then after allowing things to set for a while it would restart. First thing I thought was K40 and CPS. I started at the K40 as it is the easiest to access. First impression is the 40 amp fuse in the F4 position is blown. I opened up the K40 and there is no sign of damaged solder points. I replaced the 40 amp as a long shot and it proceeded to burn it out with in a min of the engine running.

Can anyone tell me if they feel if the K40 is bad it would burn out said fuse, or is it more likely something else upstream, deeper in the electronics is burning it out? Interesting note, the car will start and run with this fuse popped, not sure how long, but I was surprised by this.

Thanks for any and all assistance.

Need No-Start Help

Sorry, I've been away from the forum for a few years. I sold the G, but now have a 1992 200E four-door W124 sedan. It has been great. Until... It won't start. It absolutely refuses. What, man, what is going on? I could really use some pointers here... Maybe one of y'all have an idea.

Here is the checklist status of things until now:

Car functioning fine until now? YES
Daily driver? YES
Die suddenly? NO, WHILE PARKED OVERNIGHT
Weather? DRY, ABOVE FREEZING
Did I do a search of this forum? YES
Did I read tons of troubleshooting info on the internet? YES
Is there fuel in the tank? YES
Is there a buzz from fuel pump? YES
Are all fuses whole? YES
Is there juice in battery? YES
Try jumpstart anyway? YES
Is there electrical current to / from that round thing with three poles? YES
Is that other round thing with the rotor complete / whole / functioning?? YES
Electrical current to / from it ^^? YES
Is there spark at spark plug? YES
Does engine start when you add some fuel into air intake? NO
Check fuel pump relay function okay? YES
Try jumping pins 15 & 87 on fuel relay anyway? YES
Does fuel spray all over the place when loosen fuel line into injector thing and crank engine? YES
Diagnostic check of OVP = okay? YES
Spark plugs look okay? YES, SURE. LOOK LIKE SPARK PLUGS USUALLY DO I GUESS
Scratching my head? YES
Check fuel pump under car? YES. IT IS THERE. LOOKS NORMAL. CAN'T SEE MUCH ELSE.
Compression? DON'T KNOW / NO WAY TO TELL / THERE WAS YESTERDAY

And that's where things stand at the moment. I don't know what else to do. Any ideas?
Next step for me would be to tow it to a mechanic somewhere.

I just don't get it... it has been working fine until now. (although admittedly, there was one incident of hard-to-start last week sometime)

The only change during troubleshooting has been that, while cranking, it used to sound like ka-rur-rur-rur. Now it sounds more like ka-rur-rur-rar. Don't know why.

Help?

.

e420 engine, good deal?

Scouting the junkyards today I came upon a complete 95 e420, with light damage to the right front. It's a running/driving unit, and the yard would let me have it for $600 package deal, inc engine/trans and all bolt on accessories, etc. The kicker is the car has 212k miles, but looked very clean in and out, and especially the engine, no leaks could be found, at least topside. It was burried in the dirt so I couldn't see underneath.

My question is, how do these engines/trans(I assume this is a 722.3) hold up with this many miles and should I snatch it up. I would be installing this in my 86 W460 GWagen. I just finished a 617a install and am not really impressed. Thanks.

W124 Wagon - which one is better in the US?

After years of checking in at the G-wagen forum, I decided to venture further... I have been bitten hard by the Station Wagon bug, and started considering a W123 or a W124 (Diesel all the way). Among the latter, I have no idea which one makes the most sense in the US, the 3.0L 6-cyl Turbo or the later 2.5L Turbo. I know that generally speaking, it's better to stick to the later years of a model... but I know this isn't necessarily true with all lines (especially the G-class). One fact is that there's almost no W124 TDs in the market (compared to W123s), I don't know if this is because they are few and far between, or because their current owners just won't let go of them.

A side thought: To my surprise, I found little activity in the W124 forum. Would you say in retrospect that the W124 ended up being a transitional model, or perhaps the shoes of the W123 were too large to fill?

My idea is to find a versatile car mostly for weekend/daytrip/errand use, not as a daily driver... Something mechanically simple and reliable which doesn't require to be in the shop 2 out of 3 times I use it.

Any tips are appreciated, thanks.

W124 Mechanics in Dallas

Hello,

After several months of talking, I have convinced my girlfriend to purchase a W124 (she drives about 40K/year, so the reliability and efficiency of a 300D are great for her). We are picking up gorgeous example of a '92 300D 2.5 turbo tomorrow, but there isn't any record of when the timing chain was last changed, so I would like to get that taken care of. Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in north Texas (Dallas) that knows W124s pretty well?

Much appreciated.

400E Transmission Problems

I recently purchased a 1992 400E with the 4 Speed Transmission. Buying the car I knew it has some problems shifting (hard shifts). So I went and drained the fluid, changed the filter and put it some MB Transmission Fluid. Drove the car around for a while and checked the level, perfect - right in between low and full. Today I went for the first longer drive (about 100 miles mixed highway and city driving) since purchasing the car and noticed the following issues:
Whirring sound in 1st and reverse
2nd gear is skipped in all scenarios - 1st goes to about 3200RPM then shifts for a fraction of a second into 2nd then into 3rd (slightly above 1000rpm)
3rd shifts into 4th at the earliest at about 3200RPM
Kickdown from 4th to 3rd works fine with good, firm shifts
Kickdown from 3rd to 2nd results in bouncing off the rev limiter
Kickdown from a start has 1st go all the way to redline and stay there bouncing off the rev limiter - lifting from the gas results into a hard shift into 3rd
Any insights into what might be wrong?
