V12 or Blown 55 ??

Hello eveyone !!

After almost two years of enjoying my 2002 CLK55 AMG Cabriolet, I have decided that I am not realy a convertible guy. This car is my only drop top out of the 23 I have owned. I have been looking into an 2003 Cl car to replace the CLK.

My question is V12 vs 55AMG. I saw a short review on a non-Benz site, that claimed the 2003 V12 is problematic, a poor design, and a real $$ trap. While I find this hard to belive, I would like to hear a few words from real world owners, or true Benz experienced Mechanics.

THX

110 in 215

Okay. I was late for an event in North Carolina. So once I'd crossed the state line, and made sure there weren't any cops hiding nearby, I let loose. Man, this car is smooth as silk in triple digits, and you go from 60 to 100 in the blink of an eye. Can't speed in VA because of the stupid $3000 fines. Of course, doing 110 in a 60mph zone might be asking for it too, but I was late and I needed to be there as I was a participant in said event.

Right at 110, the right-side A-Pillar cover came loose. Fortunately it appears to be hinged at the bottom, so I didn't have to go back and pick it up. But it flew in the wind and made an incredible racket. High-speed aerodynamics and that. So. Stopped, snapped it back in place, resumed (all before the last cars I'd passed had caught up). Around 100 it did it again. So I went 70 until my exit in a couple miles.

Here's the point: the left-side already came loose. Weeks ago, just in normal driving. I had the dealer re-seat it. Design flaw? Hello? I told people today, buy Japanese.

Finally....

Finally made it happen. And found pretty much what I wanted

Yes I finally have it! And I'm insanely happy with it so far. Probably the biggest surprise is how big it is, compared to the E. It's so much bigger than it looks in photos! I could never drive an S-Class! Also, the E had an incredibly fleet, supple feeling to its suspension while this car is clearly heavier. A little more force, a little less finesse. The additional power of the V-8 is just about spoken for by the extra weight (as neon's calculations showed us), but those who know me know I'm not one for punching the pedal anyway. So far I have driven it just over 100 miles. Achieved 28.8mpg on the highway which is much better than I was fearing! Give me time, I'll get it up to 30 :)

It took several days, but I ended up finding two different special-order Bordeaux Red/Java Leather examples to choose from, so naturally I took the one with fewer miles :) The factory warranty runs out late next year, so wish me luck and I definitely welcome advice on purchasing the MBUSA extended warranty. I plan on keeping this car for a good while; however I've said that before ;)

One good thing is that since I've driven an E-Class for the last two years, most of the systems and controls are already familiar. And where they differ, in most cases, the CL is better :) OTOH, I haven't figured out how to use the seat massaging function properly yet. At any rate, the seat controls are fun to play with if you're stuck in traffic and feeling bored. There are about 25 different settings I think :ahhh:

30.0 MPG in CL500

Well.. I am so stoked, again... because I was afraid of taking a bigger hit than this in switching to V-8 power :)
On the way down, I managed 28.8 so I thought 30 might be in reach, but it came easier than I expected.
Just driving with my legendary light foot on the accelerator, still about 75-80mph most of the way.
The seven-speed transmission is the major factor, with the E and the CL.

103 miles, 70mph average speed, 30.0 mpg

Sorry used my crappy camera phone this time!

2003 CL55 irritating feature

I guess the biggest complaint I have on my CL55 is the "hold gear" feature of the transmission..You kick it down a gear or two and it holds the low gear for a bit of time. It might be a good thing out on the track, but in town or highway driving it acts like the tranny is not working properly. Like the dumb thing is hanging in gear too long. I wish there was some sort of override on the feature. Well, I guess there kinda is. If you are in manual mode it doesn't "hang." Only does it in auto mode. Anyway, I really do not like the feature at all !! Am I the only one who feels this way ?

MT Road Test: Top-Flight GTs

Road Test: Aston Martin DB9 vs. Bentley Continental GT vs. Ferrari 612 Scaglietti vs. Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG

The CL is the fastest by far, but it takes more than speed to win a GT event.
And the editors say it's "lacking exclusivity" but then this is a rarefied crowd.
God, who wouldn't take any one of these four?
