GL450 transmission croaked at 57k miles

My GL450 transmission decided to eat itself last weekend at 57,000 miles. The transmission fluid was changed at 40k miles as recommended by Mercedes.

We were driving down a washboard road in San Diego county (would have been in my G500, but that had chewed up a propshaft). It slipped out of 3rd gear into no gear a few times. Drove home in 2nd and 4th. Subsequent dismantling revealed a nice sprinkling of glitter in the pan and inside the filter.

The Merc re-built transmission is going to cost the better part of $5k to buy and install.

Not really what I was expecting in a $80k vehicle.

GL diesel "better" than ML diesel?

Hi folks, I'm a lurker from the G wagen forum. I'm about to sell my old 460 (280 GE converted to a 300GD) as well as an 05 E320 cdi and I'm trying to decide between a used GL cdi and a used ML cdi. I don't expect either to have the off road capability of a 460; but I do need to be able to carry several big dogs, drive up to some (small - east coast, southern appalachians) mountains on unimproved gravel or dirt roads. I may want to tow a trailerable sail boat (no more than 3000 lbs) from time to time.

What should I be thinking about or considering as I try to sort through the GL versus ML question? It seems to me that the extra space in the GL is helpful (who can't always use more space?).
Are there any options that you feel are particularly good to have?

thanks

Incorrect Bulb Specification in Owner's Manual

Not a big deal unless you think you're carrying the correct spare bulbs based on information in owners manual.
On my '07--yours may differ--manual states rear brake/tail lights are double-filament bulbs, i.e. 21/4 watts. (Two per side, BTW.)
Investigation shows they are single-filament bulbs--21 watt--and the car's electrical system apparently runs them at lower voltage when in tail light mode and increases voltage to obtain full brightness when brake pedal depressed.
21/4 watt (double-filament) bulbs in all liklihooed will not operate from these sockets.

Use of Biodiesel in V6 Diesel

This seems like even more reason to not go beyond B5 as specified by Mercedes:
Understanding the Post-Injection Problem

Quote:Many diesel engine manufacturers have implemented what’s called post-injection, the introduction of fuel late in the combustion cycle, as part of an advanced control strategy to reduce emissions. Biodiesel Magazine looks at how post-injection of biodiesel blends facilitates dilution of engine oil while interacting with oil additives to potentially accelerate engine wear.
Rest of article ...

http://biodieselmagazine.com/article...90&q=&page=all
