Clean Diesel's all the rage ????

So now it is kinda "Green" to drive a diesel.
Mind you in most US states Diesel is about $.60 more a gallon so yea you get better mpg but the fill up costs
at this rate make that a null point in the pocket of Joe American.
Most people in the US will not take the time to say: OK it will cost me $1500 more to get the Diesel option and
$.60 more a gallon and in 3 years I will start to win over having bought the car/truck/SUV in gas.
A large amount of people in the US lease cars so if it takes 2 to 3 years to get the return on investment then F that
Go gas.
Most people can not see past the huge price gap for fuel, no matter what. US is a lot of Save NOW !!!!!!
Untill they make Diesel the same or less then RUG the Diesel will still be a nitch. Mucking Forons

Buy a 1999 E 300 Turbo for 15 or so. A Mercedes-Benz diesel is still the best used car buy around, and a well kept secret from those GM loyalists!

Would you argue that the w210 or w140 diesels are more reliable?

They're dreadful automobiles, the S moreso, but that E has big issues too.

The S350 W140 is the only one with a real weakness in the design, the S300 and the following S320CDI in the W220 are good cars. S Classes are amazing cars I maintain mine the way it should be which is why I still own it...

I know for a fact the BMW E32 and I'm guessing other late 1980's early 1990's Bimmers had issues in the engine wiring and ETA's too, your never going to get a car that has no design issues. I've seen Toyotas, Hondas and Volvos with all sorts of issues that I've never seen a Mercedes have.

I've been playing with the idea of getting an older S. I always have to drive people around and they're so cramped.

I'd buy another W140 again IMO if you want to pay for the fuel your better off with the S420/500 as the I6 is a little underpowered in particular if your driving alot of people around. Servicing is pretty cheap but there are alot of electrical items that make you gasp as to their cost but alot of stuff can be found in good used condition or by 3rd party. I've put some 35000-40,000km on the car in the last 2 years and it's been pretty good for a large complicated older Euro.

Re: Clean Diesel's all the rage ????

I would never give up my SL, unless it was for a 6.0L AMG. She is my best friend, always fires up and thrills me.

The 911 makes me want to drive it off a cliff, trouble is I don't think it would make it there before I'd have another thousand dollar bill.

I am stuck with the Hyundai for another 30 months.

I like to have: Sedan, Roadster, Coupe. You got the big car you can throw your buddies and associates in. A nice car for the weekend and hitting the highway. And something to drive around when you don't want to drive a big car but it's too darn cold for a convertible.

I generally hate putting the hardtop back on and off on the Benz. It's a bit annoying and cumbersome at times.

Yeah if I wasn't able to walk everywhere in this city I'd buy something like a smart for a 2nd car for driving the centre of the city, however I'd not be opposed to a nice R129 SL with the lower body moulding colour matched and some nice 18' AMG wheels, black I think would be a nice colour.

I too would like to go with a small little urban car. Unfortunatley where I live everyone has a Dodge Ram 2500/3500, a Ford F350, an H2 or an Excursion. I guess you have to keep up with the herd.

The R129 is an amazing car. If you have the 500, mashing the gas will always knock you back in the seat.

It also is like the fancy man's 5.0L Mustang.

I think the people who drive those things would just run over a smart and not be able to help themselves so I guess you've got to protect yourself.

I like it alot better than the new SL, we are due for an update to the SL are we not the SL has changed twice where the S class has changed three times. I saw a very nice SL600 a 1999 with the pano roof a while ago some old guy with a beard was driving it with dark glasses....what a pimp lol.

The new SL is nice, but I don't have the 100,000 for a USED.

RE: Clean Diesel's all the rage ????

Jeez NZB, I totally love the current SL.  The 2003 and 2004s are starting to get affordable too.  And the retractable roof is one heck of a feature.  Mostly though, I just love the way the car looks, inside and out.  BTW, SLs don't change series as often as other lines.  Let's see, 1954, 1963, 1973, 1990, 2003... there are some big gaps there.  And jeez, I love 'em all, only I can't fit in the pagoda model.

We owned a '93 350 SDL that had the wiring harness issue. It was fixed under warranty. No issues with the engine, although there have been many mentioned. For size and economy our '99 E 300 Turbo was great! High on reliability. We have owned about a many diesels as gas models.
