Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool

I just got my CPS spare part, thanks Harald for the tip, but I still need to find the correct Torx socket.

What is the correct size, and what is the best drive for it 1/4" or 3/8".....

BTW The part was provided to me by an indie parts supplier under $90.00!

RE: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool

1/4 torx, but I don't recall the exact size. 3/8 is too big. I think Dutch posted on the other forum with some details regarding size.

I bought mine off e-bay for ~$60. It is a common part that all the MB 5.0 use.

Karl,

1/4" drive E8 torx and a very long extention - tough part is to get you hand down there (practise before attempting it in the field)impossible when engine is still hot.

Thanks guys,

I shall get the Torx, the long 1/4" extension is already in my tool assortment - and yes, I'll try it on a luke warm engine first

10-4 on the not a hot engine job. Add a 1/4" universal joint between the Torx socket and the long extension; and a magnetic retriever will help you catch the screw.

RE: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool

attach your #8 torx to a strong magnet for a couple of weeks and keep it with the sensor in the same spot (that nut is vital and if you forget it in the garage because you fixed your lawn mower last week, you'll look very old when it comes time to replace the sensor) - everything else can be improvised, but not that torx

Please, do not talk about my other car like that, and I shall keep my nuts in one row.......on that holder from snap-on

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool

I just ordered the CPS and the correct tool(s) for install. If all goes smooth, how long should this take?

It looks like the trick is being able to capture the screw once removed ...

We'll see ...

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool

I used the E8 torx with 14" 1/4" extension on 1/4" ratchet. I was able to remove the bolt without dropping it ... but when replacing the bolt (just to be careful) I used some painters tape to hold the bolt to the E8 torx so I wouldnt't drop it (it secures it nicely but pulls away just as easy once inserted) ... worked perfectly.

Note: It tool me longer to actually find the CPS than it did to replace it, once found ...

Regards,

The Meat

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool

I used the E8 torx with a 3/8" universal and 14" 3/8" extension today and it fit. 1/4" tools will give you more room, but for me there is no need to carry around the 1/4" stuff. The magnet trick worked great. Thank you guys.

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool

This thread totally helped me out today. I used a 1/4" E8 with 10" + 4" extensions. I had my E8 up against a bunch of magnets for a couple of weeks like Harald suggested and it worked beautifully.

I didn't even have to remove any parts of the driver's side airbox and took about 45 min total.

Thanks a bunch everyone!

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool

Can someone post a pic of where this sensor is, or maybe a description?

Just curious for when the time comes for me to replace mine.

RE: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool

I was having some stalling issues with my 2004 G500. Scan showed P0335-Crankshaft Position Sensor. Couple of questions. Can someone verify the correct Bosch part number as 0261210170?

Also I have read that it might be safer (not necessary easier) to go at this by removing the driverside wheel and heat shield. I'm not much of a wrench and terrified of losing the hold down bolt (even after magnetizing the socket) into the depths of never return.

Is the fender liner a and heat sheild fairly easy to remove.

Diagram lifted from Harald's post via the embedded link in this thread.

Thanks in advance for feedback and encouragement.

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool

I replaced mine today and it only took about 15 min on a cold engine.

I removed the vacuum hose from the brake booster and moved it out of the way to give a little more access, then used about a 1 inch piece of electrical insulation tape with the sticky side over the end of the E8 socket, this gave a nice resistance fit when I pushed the socket onto the bolt head which retained it perfectly for removal & instillation.

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool

now its my turn again - no complaints after 250k miles
car would not accelerate to pass another car, then run very rough.
turning engine off/on eliminates the rough running
but still fails hard acceleration
CEL is on
symptoms fit description of CPS failing

will let you know
I am still in a wheelchair and it will take a moment longer
