Photo DIY- Swivel Housing Grease Replacement.

Greets.

Again, another Simple Post, just to remind us of service intervals.

WIS specifies "Every Two Years" to check and refill. I actually check mine more frequently, around once a year.

Re: Photo DIY- Swivel Housing Grease Replacement.

How much grease did you use in each housing (when empty)?

RE: Photo DIY- Swivel Housing Grease Replacement.

Was this on your 280GE? Reason for asking is that I'm pretty sure the G500 has a 14mm hex like the diffs and TC.

During service are you purging out the old grease, or are you just topping up?

I can't agree with the "use the same grease as the CV joint" logic.  It has been observed that once the boot leaks, the grease is thrown out.  It isn't replenished from the swivel ball.  As a result you will blissfully go on with dry CVs and no warning.

Yes, Dutch, you're correct, W460.

The W463 has been filled every 10,000 miles under the "Free Maintenance" Deal, so I haven't had to touch those, yet.

I'm about 99.44% sure that they are 14mm internal hex plugs just like the diffs.

That thought has bothered me too. When I did the front axle service on my 280GE last year, I just didn't replace the boots.

RE: Photo DIY- Swivel Housing Grease Replacement.

Thank you G-AMG for the very informative and helpful Photo DIYs. I just wanted to confirm that the fill plugs on the W463 (at least on my 2002 G500) require a 14mm INHEX. I've used Redline CV-2 on other vehicles and that was what I used on the G500.

Re: Photo DIY- Swivel Housing Grease Replacement.

Cao, yes, on the 2004 G55 it also is 14mm In-hex, and for the 280GE 19mm Regular 19mm Hex-bolt.

Looks like your swivel ball housing needed some grease... it appears a bit "dry".

Thanks for the guide. Worked great for my G500. Is there an equivalent lubrication point for the rear wheels?

Yes, you are certainly correct... the "APPROVED" material is the Fuchs Renolit...

But? Here in the USA, sourcing Renolit is quite difficult. The ONLY Option which I was able to find was through the M-B Dealer, in this form:

001 989 34 51 10 which is a 5 Kg Tub of the Renolit MP 150

The reason WHY I used the Redline product? I was following the advice of several G-Wagen Gurus, by trying the RedLine products. Since then??? I have Reverted back to SPECIFIED FLUIDS in all my vehicles. Do I have to Import many of these products from Europe, etc?? Yes!, but I am feeling more comfortable using the Real-Deal products.

My .02.

RE: Photo DIY- Swivel Housing Grease Replacement.

G, many thanks for your help, very much appreciated!

And obviouly can not thank you enough for all the wonderful DIYs. The Mercedes dealer here in Tunisia is a bit of a shitshow and absolutely clueless about properly servicing a G. With all your DIYs I will be able to properly maintain my car.

I asked the same question on another thread and got a different answer (green grease?) http://pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=19530&start=...
I am not so sure.

Accoding to Bevo :

"All wheel hubs with tapered roller bearings Leading axle (VL4) model 739.5, Trailing axle (NR4) model 749.1, Wheel bearings for model designation 460/ 461/ 463"

Productname Principal
MB 267.1 Radlagerfett f. Geländewagen A 001 989 34 51 Daimler AG, Stuttgart/Deutschland
Renolit MP 150 Fuchs Petrolub AG, Mannheim/Deutschland
Shell Gadus S3 V220C 2 Shell International Petroleum Company, LONDON/UNITED KINGDOM

https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/267.1_en.html

It seems according to Bevo that it is indeed for G Wagens and Mercedes Trucks but is it for bearings per se or to top up swivel housings?

May I ask you what is the color of the grease you got ? and did you find it with WIS (I unfortunately do not have access to WIS).

Sorry for getting into details, but like you I would love to get everything by the book with approved fluids.

Thanks again.

K

RE: Photo DIY- Swivel Housing Grease Replacement.

Haa Haa,

Yes, I have been to Tunis, and I don't recall too many G-Wagens cruising around!! A bunch of OLD W123's!! But no G's!

You are 100% correct... the Fuch Renolit MP 150 is for G-Wagen Wheel Bearing *AND* Swivel Housings.

In terms of Colour? It is a very light Tan/Creme.

I also included a pic of the PASSENGER CAR Wheel bearing grease for Comparison... you can see it is a Cool "Lime-Green" tint. Fuchs Renolit LX-PEP2.

Re: Photo DIY- Swivel Housing Grease Replacement.

Eurotruck Importers sells the Fuchs Renolit!

And I believe G-AMG you are matching greases in the event that the CV axle boot breaks...NOT the U-Joint. But I could be wrong!
