AFTER-MARKET SATELLITE RADIO

I would like to install an after-market Satellite Radio in my 1986 230-GE Cabrio. I did a search on the forum and came up with nothing.

Has anyone here installed one?

If so, what brand of radio did you purchase?

Where did you mount the antenna?

And are you happy with the radio, etc.?

Agreed! I have it in my daily ML driver, and am currently trying to figure an economical way to put it in the G for my two week trip to CO, UT & AZ in Sept. Are the portable units at all worth while?

RE: AFTER-MARKET SATELLITE RADIO

K-Nine,

I use to own a 1986 280GE with a Pioneer Nav, DVD, SAT Radio. The SAT radio antenna was installed by running the cable through the side interior of the vehicle and then to the rear above cargo door with a magnet to the roof.

Below are photos, of how the Pioneer Nav, DVD, SAT Radio was installed in my G-Wagen.

Respectfully,

James Van Thach

RE: AFTER-MARKET SATELLITE RADIO

James,

Do you remember the model number of the radio nav system? I like that this looks like a radio and then pop's up to display the navigation screen.

Do you know if anyone other than pioneer makes something like this?

Thank you.

Sorry,

I forgot I do have something like that in my work truck, with XM radio, Ipod and rear view camera.......I think it is called a Pioneer Avic N2 or so.

Much better Nav functions than the MB Comand System.

For the 300GE, I ran the wire for a GPS antenna inside the right fender, into the right indicator/blinker light and under the gasket onto the fender just behind the right blinker light. The built magnet kept it nicely in place

RE: AFTER-MARKET SATELLITE RADIO

I have XM through the head unit in my 460.  I used a cheap Sony AM/FM/CD player that was called out as "XM ready".  In the case of this unit it meant that the head unit could control a Terk XM box through a translator that plugged into a 9-pin jack in the back to fhe head unit and the XM sound comes back to the head unit through pre-amp RCA inputs.  Here are the components I put together.

PS - my antenna wire goes up the A-pillar to the mag-mounted antenna on the front right corner of the roof and yes, I'm very happy with it.  We have XM in both cars and the house.  Couldn't go back to regular radio.

RE: AFTER-MARKET SATELLITE RADIO

Portable units are inexpensive and can go from car to truck to G to office to home, no problem. Sirius even has a battery powered one to use like an ipod (it has a harddrive). They are about to merge so I guess it doesn't matter which one you have.

The question is: Is that battery powered portable worth a da*n? I've heard that the antenna in the earphone cable is almost worthless, as are the batteries.

AGuess,

You can install the Pioneer AVIC-N2 DVD/CD/navigation receiver with 6.5" monitor, SAT Radio.

I also have it installed in my 1995 Mercedes-Benz G320.
