DIY Brake Job

Anyone changed the pads on thier E? I know the SBC system makes it a bit more complicated than normal. I have 42000 on the clock and know a brake job is in my near future.

RE: DIY Brake Job

DO NOT attempt this without disabling SBC first.

It's easy to do, just pull the big connector off.

You really shouldn't do this without reference to WIS procedures--some bolts must be replaced, not reused, etc.

Ditto!

From what I hear, SBC can  be deactivated via Star diagnostics. I'm also attaching a PDF that may have some more info.  I have no idea if this procedure works or not.

Danger! Risk of injury. When working on the SBC

brake system, body parts may be jammed or

crushed and skin and eye injuries may result

due to brake fluid escaping under high pressure.

Re: DIY Brake Job

Yep I'd have to agree. And it's a shame because brake pads were once a relatively 'fun' task.

With the SBC it'd be a no-brainer for me. Support your local %&#@!

Gabe,

I did it the hard way.......brake pads were always fun to do.....until everything was apart and I noticed my buddy had sold me the wrong pads

Reading before about the SBC, I figured big deal, it should just "go" like all the others - don't need those stinking SBC notes......Big Surprise: Never seen so many red lights come on in the display and I couldn't "pump" up the brake at all

Next attempt with the correct brake pads, Star Diagnose System connected, de-activated the SBC, changing out the (correct) brake pads, re-activating the SBC - no problems at all.
The SBC ECU pumped up the brakes on its own, checked everything to be correct & fine and almost cleaned the used tools and placed them into the toolbox....

Karl

^^^ That's good to hear. Despite your initial mishap, it can be done!

RE: DIY Brake Job

Just disconnect the big electrical connector at the front of the SBC box and then the change is same as any other.

Guess I wouldn't open any doors during the process, i.e. don't cause any disturbance to electrical system.

Pretty cool new pad hanging design--looks to mostly eliminate need for anti-squeel paste.
