Oil viscosity range and brand

Perusing the forums has produced a welter of information in regards to the oil used in my ML320 MY2000. The only thing I seem to be getting is that the oil viscosity are skewed to the colder northern climates, i.e. they all specify 0w-40w or 5w-50w which is great if you are going from snow to mild summers. Down here in Oz where the mid winter temp drops to +5c to a summer high of +48c I was thinking about changing the oil to a 15w-40w/50w. Will this be advisable, seeing that the car is out of warranty and with Mobil 1 going for $AUS75.00 for 5 litres I can get Shell Helix for half price. The other item is if I do change from Mobil 1 to Shell Helix will that be a detrimental change, considering it will be a complete oil change (plus filter) not a top up.

RE: Oil viscosity range and brand

I would go with the higher viscosity and go with a less expensive, but still quality brand name oil. The change will not be detrimental.

I used Castrol 20W50 conventional dino oil in my M110 280GE for years; and it ran like a top. I run a high quality 10W40 synthetic in my M113 G500 and it does just fine. The ML320CDI gets 5W-40, but only because it's the only oil allowed in the CDI engines. In hotter climes, I do not like those 0W or 5W oils, but that's a personal preference.

RE: Oil viscosity range and brand

I have a 1992 300 SEL W140 with a verified 68,000 miles from new. The M104 engine seems happy with 10W-40 semi-synthetic. I use Mobil Super-S. The engine burns a bit but not much. I think it's about 1 litre in 5000 miles. Is there any value in changing to a fully synthetic oil for this engine? any ideas? I have asked around and there are a lot of people with opinions but nobody really knows the answer. I live in South East England and the temperature can range from -8C to + 35C.
