EGT's

Is there anyone that can explain what the allowable EGT's are on a diesel.
Are they different to Petrol vehicles?
Would an intercooler help bring EGT's down?

I've read so many stories, yet in a 290GDT the EGT's can easily be taken up to 800 deg C which is according to most literature a definate no no. Why then does Mecedes not limit the EGT's by means of electronics? or even install EGT's as standard and warn the driver of high temps.
