Photo DIY- "How to Get Rid of the Stupid 'SOS' Error Message" a la STAR

Greets.

I remember a while back, several people were trying to figure out how to get rid of the Error/Malfunction warning of "Teleaid and SOS" Malfunction that a vast majority of us have...

Since getting my new "Toy" of the STAR Compact 3 Xentry..... I've had the chance to Play Around with things...

Well, as usual, I am ashamed of MB's Tech Competence...... How many of you reported "My Dealer Doesn't Know How to Shut it Off...", and yet I, the "Temple Monkey", figured it out in 10 minutes.

I thought it best to actually copy the screens during the procedure, so you can take it to the dealer and (HOPEFULLY) they will be able to figure out how to navigate to the Coding Page....

Here you go! I hope it helps...

G

Thanks for posting that. I think that complaint message about Tele-Aid not being present is a recent addition to the STAR system. It's only recently that the analog version of Tele-Aid was discontinued.

Does that mean you can or cannot any longer use the telephone option of your comand still? Or did you just end the SOS bs?

Tell me more about the Star Compact 3 Xentry? If you would rather, you have my email, I think ...

Thanks G-AMG,

just found your post about that annoying message by "accident"......

I noticed in your 462241 the autopilot had a fault - make sure that the autopilot is working correctly for those long Texan roads

NoPaint - Telephone still works after you do that Tele-aid de-activation procedure.

Re: Photo DIY- "How to Get Rid of the Stupid 'SOS' Error Message" a la STAR

Any one know of a shop in Chicago that can do this for a reasonable price for 10 mins of their time? It's pretty annoying having that on the dash. The ones that I've called want $120...

Pay the $120 or just ignore it

Don't forget to print out the instructions from here if you decide to take it in somewhere, likely they will have no clue and still charge you $120

RE: Photo DIY- "How to Get Rid of the Stupid 'SOS' Error Message" a la STAR

Yeah...I've ignored it this long so I guess I'll do it for awhile longer
The other weird thing is that there are some shops that can do it but say they are not willing to do it b/c it's a safety issue and they don't want to disable it. Is that true or do they don't know how to do it. Ha
I'll just keep these print outs handy...thank you for the screen captures.

Re: Photo DIY- "How to Get Rid of the Stupid 'SOS' Error Message" a la STAR

They may think it is part of the SRS (airbag) or other safety systems. The dealer did it for me with a 1 hour diagnostic charge. If I were you I would take it to them and show them the printouts. At least they will know the Tele Aid is not a safety system and is infact not useable with an analog set up.

If your car was sold by MBUSA, it is likely your model is a 463.249 rather than the 463.241 shown on the computer displays

Re: Photo DIY- "How to Get Rid of the Stupid 'SOS' Error Message" a la STAR

Question for otiswesty...
I was able to find an independent that is willing to do it for me but he asked me "if have the programmable control module that will accept that command, The only way to tell is to give it a try an access the control module"

I'm guessing I do have a programmable control module, it's a 2005 G500...please let me know...your knowledge in this surpasses mine.

Thanks

RE: Photo DIY- "How to Get Rid of the Stupid 'SOS' Error Message" a la STAR

Thanks so much. I printed out your screen shots and gave them to the local MB service manager this morning. Not surprisingly, I got a fair amount of pushback from the servicde manager on even trying what you suggested. In fact he even said that he had the same problem on his own vehicle several years ago and he just learned to live with it. He stated that he was afraid that disconnecting the SOS/Tele Aid module from the "network" with the all of the other modules would cause other parts of the "network" to fail. At any rate, it worked like a charm and for the first time in a long time my '02 C320 no longer reports the annoying "SOS Tele Aid" malfunction (and everything else works fine).

RE: Photo DIY- "How to Get Rid of the Stupid 'SOS' Error Message" a la STAR

quick question on this - do you have to have the STAR system or can it be done by an independent that uses another diagnostic (I think its an Alltel)?

I did buy the STAR system but haven't hooked it up or initialized it yet, at this point I'd rather sell it to offset some of the costs for the current repair job.
