Shock Perch Repair.. A La Welding Temple Monkey...

Ok, I finally got up the Testicular Fortitude to tackle this repair...

PLEASE NOTE!!! This is NOT intended as a "Tutorial", rather I am posting to LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS, as to whether or not I am doing things CORRECTLY.

I have NEVER touched a welder before starting this work, so I will proudly take any "Hits" from the pro's, in order to learn something..

Just please promise to not LAUGH at the resultant beads... Remember, I am but a lowly Welding Temple Monkey....

Very nice work G-man......

The welding beads are looking beautiful - first time welding?

The frame tube seemed to be in perfect condition, your earlier pictures......I was worried about the rusty condition of that tube.

Another workscope completed very well - as usual

Nice work.... nice shiny new looking tools too Question, what plasma cutter do you have? My no-name brand unit will only reliably cut sheet metal, looking for a decent replacement.

Great looking welds. I'm hoping that you at least practised a bit before going in! It sure puts me to shame with my first welds.

Cheers,

Michael

I don't know what occupation you are holding Sir, but your middle name should definitely be "surgical"! I always like your reports!

Good work.  That Marine Clean is quite the magical stuff...that is what I use when I clean my motor.

Oh yeah, this emoticon iis for you >>>

I agree... I was quite surprised how well it worked, EVEN at a 50/50 dilution....

I have always used "Simple Green", but the Marine Cleaner is much superior..

Re: Shock Perch Repair.. A La Welding Temple Monkey...

Good to see in you action.
If you need some extra practice, you can always get some scrap metal (bars, beams and sheet metal) and just start welding parts together.
This is how I started on a welding course I had in school.

For now you're doing a good job however!

Having the pleasure of meeting G-AMG in person, I can say his attention to detail and methodical approach to all things "G" is exceptional. I really appreciated his willingness to inspect my "new to me" G.
His welded shock mounts look factory installed.

Nice welding job.

FY!:
Your shocks look like Bilsteins. I had to replace the rubbers on mine recently and at the top of the shock there is an opening for a Allen wrench. There is just enough room between the body and the top of the shock to get a small L shaped Allen wrench in there to keep the rod from turning to remove the nut.

Thanks for the photos.

Boy, lifting the body off of the frame makes for a much better access.
