Phone antenna

My car has a huge, ugly phone antenna that I want to get rid of. Does anyone know what is used to cover the hole after removing the antenna?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: Phone antenna

Is it in the rear glass or in sheet metal?

In glass-- I'd say use clear silicone. Metal-- uhh find some type of a rubber plug?

Maybe this is a good time for you to upgrade to satelite radio and put the extant hole to good use for the new antenna?

It's in the metal. Rubber plug sounds good---where would I acquire one of those?

Re: Phone antenna

hahaha *you* are the one that was talking about novelty shops like you're a pro..

Iunno, really, but I'll almost bet that any McParts type store will carry generic ones!

On another avenue of repair-- I'm thinking of learning to weld so when I start to hardcore fix on the theobould, that I can do it myself- That'd be a more permanant/expensive fix.

Might I suggest that before you fill the hole, that you sand the edges just a little to remove any bits of rust(don't do the paint, just a lil bit) and then use touch-up paint to protect the bare metal. We don't want your lovely car's paint to start rust bubbling!

Probably your best option is a 'blind' or 'blanking' grommet. However, you need to know the EXACT diameter of the hole to be filled and it may be necesaary to ream the existing hole to ensure the tightest of fits.If a rubber fix doesn't appeal I think there are patent antenna hole plugs available which bolt up in much the same way as the original antenna and therefore can accomodate a wider range of diameters.
Maybe I'm suffering from deja-vu.I'm sure someone asked me this same question quite recently :-)

Thanks, DR.

I'm not sure about reaming anything--lol.

RE: Phone antenna

The population of teh state can't be that big, isn't it one of the largest cities, whats the total pop? It looks bigger than the state capital Montgomery. Ok looking on encarta its quite an interesting city, 230k total pop and a population that is over 70% African American, no wonder it was where some of teh biggest civil rights protests were held in the 60's. Whats the climate like?

Most of the whites moved out during the Great White Flight of '84. J/K.

The climate is great now. Next month it will be in the upper 90s and extremely humid.

Sorry this is off topic, I figured that you had this thing with your car sorted so it would not matter, I am a cronic tangent maker. Within the next 5 years (Have to finish uni first) I want to do a trip in the US around the mid west and south outside of the usual tourist areas on the coasts. My Dad did it and found some neat stuff around the place.

That's cool--I don't think the mods will move us.

Alabama is a beautiful state and it is definitely not tourist-y. There's a few really good state parks here--good fishing, hiking, etc. There's also a few really cool places to party.

I also plan to get all those southern girls with my accent HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I don't know how long it will take me to do the trip, I may even end up working in the US. It will be alot of driving, but to see what the country is really like it will be worth it.

Are you kidding? This is the most action we've had here! Please continue on or off topic.

Jillian, is this an old analog pigtail antenna? I have one of those on my 500 punched through the rear window glass.

That's the one, except mine is on the body. Quite ugly and useless, of course.
