Another "Bride of Frankenstein" Moment...

For a while, now, I've been having troubles with my Front Differential Lock mechanism---> It locked fine... but wouldn't UN-LOCK! I would have to jack the front end up, and monkey with the axle until it un-locked..

After Reading or_550i's saga, I had the encouragement to tear into the system. I ended up doing both the Master and Slave systems.

Now, instead of having to use two arms, and a small boy, to lift the Locker Rods... now it's as slick as snot, and the differentials lock and un-lock, like a DREAM!!

Even more special is to know that now, my truck has an "Organ Donation" from one of our Bretheren's trucks.


Sorry I missed a few pics.... this was a drawn-out affair, and I was doing things piecemeal... so I (photographically!) missed a few steps along the way.

Great tread! Ill be using this when Im going to overhaul my front locker, Its stuck, cant pull it up. I guess its the eksakt same problem, also the diff-lock light on the dash is gone. Very nice DIY-tred:)

Can you tell more about the re install adjustment? Just till it touches the dog clutch?

How do you tell? Are you moving the unit side to side until you feel something or?

The WIS steps are very confusing -
1. What does "operate " cylindrical actuactor mean? In a previous version of the procedure they called for applying air pressure to operate the actuator

2. "Stop of the dog clutch" There is no stopper on the clutch - I assume they mean until you cannot press it in any more AND its engaged to the differential

3. "The inner spring must not be tensioned" There are 3 inner springs and they are all under constant tension - so what do they really mean?

I have noticed that the English WIS procedures on the WIS have become increasingly vague and poorly described . I wish they would write the procedures like they did 30 years ago.

It's good to know Ed Hicks will order W460 parts. I haven't tried in the DFW area, but I'm prepared for a lot of stupid looks from parts guys. G-AMG, can you post a picture of the internal puller you used? I'll be doing this job soon and will need to remove a seized piston. Thanks!

Just did this job and wanted to add another tip for getting the stuck piston out without the internal puller. I found my grease gun has the same thread diameter as the hydraulic line going into the cylinder. It was as simple as screwing my grease gun on and a few pumps and the piston came out! Of course you end up with a cylinder full of grease but that's relatively easy to clean out.
