350SD to Hyundai

On my way to drop off my daughter at the nursery school. I always pass by a house with a beautiful deep blue 350SD (yes, a 1990 350SD - a rarity) in the garage - the garage door is left open on most days.  It's owned by a old Portuguese grandpa.  One day this month, I notice that after about a month of being on a cruise or away on some vacation, he is back and the house that had been shuttered is open again, including the garage door.

In the garage, there is a little tinny silver Hyundai Elantra instead of the familiar deep blue 350SD.  I figure the car's in the shop and he must be renting.  But day after day, the Hyundai is there and I finally pull over and ask him what's up.

Turns out he traded in his 350SD for a Hyundai.

I guess a retired man can't pay the high maintenance of a Mercedes Benz.

When I read your thread title I thought someone did some sick, weird, perverted conversion thing to an innocent 126.

All they need is a 3.0 L 603 from a wrecked 87 124 and you have the perfect Diesel-Benz

RE: 350SD to Hyundai

I think old people just can't be bothered with a car that is a pain in the ass to look after, my grandpa got rid of his jag to by a Honda and I know he can afford to buy any car he wants.

Turns out he traded in his 350SD for a Hyundai.

Does this mean the 350SD is sitting at the Hyundai dealer's?

Where I wonder?  How many miles, what price etc etc?

I would assume in or around Westchester, NY.

Be careful with those, if not refitted or replaced the engine’s like to go ka-foom…

I don't get it, what's that mean? (Somehow all the emoticons didn't adequately clarify )

350SD is a good engine or bad?? TIA..

RE: 350SD to Hyundai

350 diesel engines from a W126 (OM603A - do I have that correct jdc?) is notorious for catastrophic failure.  It went aluminium block and is very prone to failure once it overheats.  Also, I know 350SD/L have issues with conrods.  From what I learned through W126 discussion group in the other forum, if you plan to own a 350SD/L, be prepared to switch the engine.

My guess is his car suffered some costly engine damage and he decided to let it go.  Yes, I'm sure if I ask, he could tell me which dealer he traded in his car.

RE: 350SD to Hyundai

Yes, it's a shame because it's an otherwise good engine. One theory holds that a leaking turbo seal allows small amounts of oil to collect in the intake runners, harden into carbon bits which break off and get sucked into the combustion chamber. When the piston is at TDC, ka-foom, bent rod. Death comes slowly as the piston eggs out the cylinder resulting in excessive oil consumption, oil starvation, and a seized engine.

It's also a shame as the 350 SDLs were almost as well appointed as the 560s with the same stability and grace with much better fuel economy.

RE: 350SD to Hyundai

Thanks much for the info guys... will adjust sights accordingly..

Checked out a 300SE today, but got caught in a deluge, anyway they wanted too much $$ for it.  But definitely have 126 on the brain again.. on the way home, saw a 350SE which I'd never seen before.. just looked it up and it doesn't look as though it was ever a U.S. model... I presume the engine isn't remotely related to the current V-6...

G'day Marsden

I am completely unaware of a 126 350 SE.

Is it possible it was a 380 SE?

I don't believe there ever was a 350 SE. Someone may have transplanted an engine, or just stuck on a 350 SE badge (why??).

I am always happy to be corrected!

Cheers

There was no 126 350 SE. There was the 116 350 SE:

http://classiccarfair.com/1977mercedesbenz350se.htm

It was not sold in the US.

There was the S 350 turbodiesel 140 chassis but I don’t think there was another 3.5 L gas engine after the 116.

RE: 350SD to Hyundai

Hmmm well who knows.  Was definitely a 126 and I thought it said 350SE on the decklid, looked twice to make sure I wasn't imagining it, but it was raining hard so maybe I wasn't seeing str8 and it was actually 380SE...

No big deal. The important thing is you find a 126 you like.

I used to go through cars like potato chips. I’d get bored and buy a new car every ten months or so.

I don’t feel that way about my 126, in fact I like it more the longer I own and drive it.

Re: 350SD to Hyundai

I saw a 350sd for sale, it was a short body, in that really dated teal color, with the bile-beige interior.

It cranked so fast! But it sounded unhealthy, not like a Shlomo at all, more like a tdi VW with issues. He wanted 8 grand for it and it was just as beat up as my 10-12 year older 240, mom was very unimpressed, and hasn't looked at a w126 since.

I'm still trying to get her into a 202/210, but for those prices, she would rather look at nearly new v8 grandma quis-- Which I think is fine as well-- its kinda just a modern 420sel with cheaper plastics. Pretty near indestructible, too!
