Steering Wheel Update

I would like to update my 460 steering wheel with a later model Mercedes type. My question is what fits?

Correct me if I'm wrong(probably am) but I think the 460 steering wheels are just bolt off and bolt on replacement with no wiring? I think SOME have airbags and that would make it a little harder I would guess?

I wonder if you could throw a 463 wheel on there and just not worry about plugging in all the controls? If yours doesn't have a airbag you MIGHT be able to find a cheap "BLOWN" 463 airbag one, reseal with no airbag inside and bolt it on? Would serve ZERO function BUT would look updated?

Again, I am not sure and just trying to think of options with you

This is for the 1985 300 GD, correct? That's a good start, at least you have the plastic around the column, etc that the pre-82 trucks didn't have.

Next question, what are you trying to get in the new steering wheel? It'll hekp narrow down whether it will fit to know what your goal is for the change.

There are a bunch of guys here who are MB car buffs in addition to being G owners so they can probably help with some ideas given a little more info.

Good luck!

RE: Steering Wheel Update

Also,
Your best option might be to look at another class wheel(C or E would be my guess). I believe they were pretty much plug and play back then and the C or E class wheels should be easier and cheaper to find

RE: Steering Wheel Update

Non 460 and 463 steering wheels are smaller in size. I had a Brabus steering wheel in my Brabus G36 and Brabus used the same they install in the other MB's. The problem I had is that the top of the Brabus steering wheel covered the highest part of the speedometer. It was difficult to see if you were driving 100 or 120km/h.

You could use a 461 steering wheel.
I have one in my 280ge

RE: Steering Wheel Update

I have a 461 and can't see the numbers between 50 and 140 km/h.
Sure, I'm a tall guy, but my wife is complaining about 70 to 110.
Newer style steering wheel will block some of your vision towards the instrument cluster.

Re: Steering Wheel Update

Johnny, Since I too am tall on my 460 I simply swapped the gauges so that I could easily see the left side of the gauge.

The steering wheels of the 123 and 124 chassis Mercedes should be a direct fit. Like one of these:

RE: Steering Wheel Update

I've been outta town and not had a chance to check this post, but WOW thanks for the feedback.

For starters the wheel is similar to what you would find in a 80s 300sd, nonairbag. I don't like the big school bus look to it. And I know if I get a smaller Dia. wheel it will be harder to steer. Alot of my G has already been updated and the steering wheel is an eyesore.

Going by your suggestions I'll probably look for a mid 90s wheel off a C or S.
