Re: Skyway Motorway in the Talladega National Forest - Treffen?

Fall SE Treffen,

Our Fall Treffen is this weekend and the weather looks perfect! Highs in the 60's, lows in the 40's. We have 5 trucks signed up to run the Skyway Motorway at the moment.

Schedule:

Friday 11-8
Some are staying the night at the Cheaha SP campgrounds. Others may be diving in on Saturday morning. A restaurant and general store is available at the park.

Saturday 11-9

10:00 am meet HW 148 / CR6000 1, at the south end of trail. "P"
Plan to be topped off with fuel and on time as we will be starting the trail at 10 am. Bring a lunch, snacks drinks for a trailside lunch.

11:30- Noon. Have a nice trail lunch at one of the scenic vista. "O"

We should finish the days driving route around 5pm at Cheaha State Park "J" for diner, drinks, fellowship and lodging of your choice. There are some great hiking trails in and around the park for those interested in checking out some of Alabama's waterfalls.

Route description:

HW 148 / CR6000 1 to the north on the Skyway Motorway to HW 77 was nice and scenic, unimproved gravel/rock road with minor/moderate washouts, little mud, a few blow downs(one required partial removal). This section offed some great vistas, camping, picnicking and photo opportunities, we didn't see another human for 2 hours.

The second section just north of 77 and Horn Lake Road to Gunters Town Rd. After you cross the RR tracks and Creek the road turns into Skyline Dr. This was a more technical section with larger boulders, moderate washouts and little mud. I really wanted to air down or use lockers but didn't need them with decent lines. It had just showered leaving the rocks slick and soil soft. Great driving and views. We ran into some local teens on four wheelers near the creek and had a nice conversation about Suzuki 4wd trucks.

The third section North of Gunters Town Rd to HW 281 was an easy drive having been recently graded but offered good veiws and solitude. We did share the road with one other truck, the first of the day! The Skyway Motorway continues to the left on HW 281 which is paved, we drove it to Cheaha Resort State Park. They offer a restaurant and general store.

Sunday 11/10

8-9 am Breakfast at the park.

9-10 am Break camp or explore.

10 am Depart from the General store parking lot on HW 281 to the North. "J"
We will follow the Skyway/HW 281 north until it joins NF 500. We will once again enjoy non paved NF roads for about 30 miles until the trail ends near Piedmont on Duggar Mountain Road. We will have some options as small sections of NF 500 are paved however non paved bypasses are available if we want to. "NF548"

1-2 pm We should have completed the trail and will possibly part ways or have lunch and part ways. We can make the decision about continuing our off road driving for the afternoon at Choccolocco off road park.

Equipment:

I will not get into trying to tell you what to bring to make this a safe, comfortable and enjoyable trip. If you are anything like me you will be prepared with:
Mechanically sound vehicle
Fire extinguisher
first aid kit (i'm certified in Wilderness First Aid)
recovery gear (I'll bring axe, hatchet and hand saw, and a chain saw if no one else is bringing one)
Spares
air
tools
Survival gear
Rain gear
Clothing
Water
Food
Navigation
Communication (cell service is spotty, I will bring along 3 hand held frs radios, not the best but should work with a small group.)
Beer, Wine, Tea
ETC...

I cant wait to see you all there!

Re: Skyway Motorway in the Talladega National Forest - Treffen?

Hope you guys have a great time, I wanted to attend but my new 82 280ge hasn't proved that is reliable enough for a off-road trip yet. I am looking forward to meeting everyone in the future.

A Great Weekend!!

Thanks Matt for organizing a great weekend. I never knew that Alabama had such good off-road trails and great mountain vistas. Thanks for the introduction to them.

Photos to follow shortly.

RE: Skyway Motorway in the Talladega National Forest - Treffen?

Thanks Matt (De Fuerer),

Well planned/fun trip. Got to do a little puddle jumping. It was great hanging out with the group and flexing the Gs muscles a bit.

Also thanks to our west coast cruise director Karl for initiating this event.

Mark

Looks like you guys had a great trip, can't for the next one. I have explored some of those trails/road in my 4Runner and on my KTM 450 EXC. I think a trip to the North GA area around Helen would be fun.

your pictures are like snow pictures for me - I like to look at them, but I definitely do not want to be there

on the other hand, any place on the planet will do to spend time with friends

Karl and I are getting ready for our winter adventure
and no I will not try to talk you into coming down to Baja
it's definitely not for everyone

Was this just a tall-guy event or what? I was going to fly out to ride with Inkblotz until he said, "sorry Steve, you're not quite 5'11" are you?"

Nice shots. Fall colors. Peeeeerty!

Thanks for posting.
