RE: DIY Rear Cargo Area

I have been inspired by this Cargo platform thread. I am working on a version of a rear cargo platform that is easily removed when not needed and folds up into a box. I am thinking of using piano hinges to join the side flaps. I have not made actual measurements yet.  It is just a concept now.  Another option would be to add a sliding drawer within the box. What do you guys think? Do you see any potential issues?

Mine ended up being 4 removal boxes, made from 16 mm. MDF and with aluminum piano-hinges, will post pics. Have been using it for 9 month with no issues.

Re: DIY Rear Cargo Area

TBB, it's nice to see a fellow sketchup use and woodworker here. Your design is pretty cool. It will be great to see what goes inside those compartments.
Glad to know the piano hinges work well for you. I was worried about them holding the weight when using it as a bed. I am thinking abou using 5/8" birch ply rather than 3/4" for weight savings so it's good to know 16mm is working well for you. I would love to see the pics of your build and setup. I have a festool domino that have been just sitting around so I might use it for this project.

RE: DIY Rear Cargo Area

Yeah - Sketchup is cool for this stuff.

Just to be clear: my design is made so that the hinges don´t need to support any substantial weight, the hinges might hold up, but the fixtures in the MDF might not. I will try to get some pics. tomorrow. I have one box for all the electrical stuff, like the compressor, aux. batteries, inverter i.e. One for clothes, with a section for food and all my cooking stuff, one for my water jerrycans, and one for my ENGEL with a section for different stuff.

RE: DIY Rear Cargo Area

Just had five min. to update my Sketchup file:

Total of four boxes: one 1100 mm. by 450, one 1100 mm.. by 550 mm., and one around 400 mm. by 450 mm., one around 400 mm. by 550 mm. all on a big singel baseplate of 21 mm. plywood bolted to the M10 fixtures in the car.

More later....

Re: DIY Rear Cargo Area

That is pretty fancy compared to my design. I'm now wondering if I can make some flip up doors and compartments while keeping things flat. I don't want this to get too heavy as well. I wonder if going to 1/2" will still provide enough strength. Please post many pics of the build and what you put inside the compartments.

RE: DIY Rear Cargo Area

Cool photo. please share some more when you get a chance.

I have lightened the design. I also gave the right side some vertical support. I need to decide if this needs to be a knock down piece or just glued together. What do you guys think?

RE: DIY Rear Cargo Area

Thanks for the inspiration, your builds look great!

I'm done with my own now as well. I built it using 19mm MDF board. The fridge is mounted on top, seven 25ah batteries fit underneath.

EDIT: Photo removed to be resized.

RE: DIY Rear Cargo Area

I had modified my cargo area earlier this year and was looking for a mat to cover the area to control sand always getting deep into the carpet after beach trips.

I found this Plastic Pan which is used in dog crates. Its 53.25"L x 36.63"W x 1.5"H and fits in this new space perfectly.

RE: DIY Rear Cargo Area

I finished the rear shelf quite sometime back & thought I better get some photos up.

I covered it in marine carpet & put 3 x cargo rails on top for securing everything. My Engel Fridge fits on the LHS between the rails, all of my recovery gear, tools, spares, air compressor & chairs fit nicely underneath, everything thing else on top secured by straps secured to points on the cargo rails.

Loaded up at the end go a 6 day trip into Oman with the family. I also fitted a fold down shelf on the back door which works a treat from making lunch, cooking etc.

Nice work!

I'll post a few pictures of the shoe horn maneuver to get that man sized wood properly placed in the posterior. Hope it helps.

The material is green insulation board, it is cut to larger dimensions/max, than yours. It will eventually be a composite panel. Time and money.

Is that a spare battery where the cd player used to be? I like that idea so I can install one to run some equipmemt while camping.

RE: DIY Rear Cargo Area

Have just made a replacement storage system for my rear bench seat. Don't travel with kids anymore so decided to get better use of the space.

Re: DIY Rear Cargo Area

I built a rear trunk drawer system using 500lbs Locking Glides from Accuride (the same things they use in Fire Trucks), 1/2" and 3/4" plywood.

Finishing up the front panel in the next two weeks so hopefully will be able to share some photos.

The only problem is now my dog can't really jump into the trunk area, I lift him into it because I added about 20" to the rear cargo area off the floor.
