Photo DIY- Fan Spped Regulator Conversion to W140 Style.

Greets.

With my youngest son learing to drive the old bird, the irratic fan speed was becoming a dangerous Distraction, so I opted to replace the thing. It is over 10 years since I did the last one (KAE Brand last time).

To my disappointment, I found the W210 part number is "NLA" (No Longer Available), and I would have to upgrade to the "New" W210 Fan set-up with a different blower, and new-style regulator. Well, I was not interested in blowing (pardong the pun!) $500 clams on a new system. I opted for the $50 option! I could have went with the KAE version at $160, but I thought I would give the Behr version a try, this time. I have the KAE, currently, in our W140.

Soooo, with a bit of research, I found the OLD W210 Regulator itself was supposedly the SAME as the W140 version, with the Exception of the Wiring Harness.
The good news is, the Wire Colors are the same, so it is impossible to screw the job up.

One of the posted methods is to to Re-Solder the OLD Harness Directly into the NEW Regulator.... but this requires dismantling the new regulator box, which I also did not want to do.

Admittedly, I SUCK at Soldering, so I opted to use the Latest Mercedes Approved Harness Repair Method, using Adhesive-Sealed, Shrink-Wrapped, Self-Soldering Splice Butt Connectors.

For more information on the "How-To" Use these connectors, visit their site:

http://www.calcentron.com/Pages/elektralink/elektralink_sealed_sold...

I have used this splicing method on Numerous occasions, and it yields a really nice, SOLID Connection. You can really pull on both ends of the wires, and it doesn't come apart.

While I was in there, I opted to change out the "Activated Charcoal Filters", and I'm glad I did!! To be Bluntly Honest? I had no idea those filters were even there!! And, at 170,000 miles? I obviously have never changed them!

Anyhoooo, if you don't want to Upgrade to the new W210 system, there is still hope in renewing your Fan Speed Regulator!
