Photo DIY- W460 Instrument Gauge Glass R/R

Ok, probably a stupid post, but since I did the work, I thought I would "throw it out there".

I am trying to get the Old Klunkerwagen a bit spruced-up in preparation for my boys to drive it. I did not want Foggy Gauges to be an excuse of "Oh, I Could Not See the Speedometer Clearly.... therefore I got a Speeding-Ticket"! Ha ha...

Suprisingly, the actual Gauge Faces themselves were pristine. I'm not sure where the "Fog" came from, but all 3 gauges were Sweaty/Foggy.

Now? WOW! Really nice and Clean/Clear.

Nice job.

When taking apart the speedometer to repair a broken odometer, the glass is removed in the same manner.

RE: Photo DIY- W460 Instrument Gauge Glass R/R

I performed this about a year ago. It works pretty good. Before re-assembly, sand, prime & paint the bezels. I used Duplicolor TP70 TRIM PAINT with good results. I should have painted the needles with phosphorescent orange paint however.

Note: make sure the correct side of the glass is pointing outward. The inside of my lenses were matte finished!!

Also, I believe these gauges fog because of moisture build-up. When its cold and the headlights are on, the back light heats the lenses and produces condensation inside the gauge. Then it dries as a white mist. After several decades, its fogged.

I repainted all the needles on mine recently, using the orange floro "Tamiya Color X-6" paint, available in any hobby shop.

Yes...one tip if you remove the needle you will need to recalibrate the speedometer as the spring preload will change, spin the speedo before hand with a drill to get a reference point. I had done this during my repair, however didn't include pictures of it in the post. http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=18728&po...

Re: Photo DIY- W460 Instrument Gauge Glass R/R

Has anyone look at the possibility of replacing the light bulbs of the cluster with LEDs? I have done that with the dome light, and the improvement was impressive

RE: Photo DIY- W460 Instrument Gauge Glass R/R

I must say that the gauge disassembly, and the prying of of the bezel off was easier than I expected, thanks to the above for posting the how-to.  I had some T5 LED's so I replaced the bulbs in in the right instrument cluster.  New lights, clean glass, what a difference!
