Photo DIY- Manual Transmission Floor Shifter Overhaul

Well, a bit of "Lapse in Judgement" on my part...

My brother-in-law was visiting, and wanted to take the Bride-of-Frankenstein for a spin.

After only a short drive? The Shifter mechanism is ALL messed-up. Tweeked out of shape, and Loose with a TERRIBLE amount of SLOP!

Here is a video clip of how much Slop in 4th gear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFR0MlO0l8c&feature=youtu.be

Ok, "probably" a coincidence in a 35 year-old Klunkerwagen.

While planning a Rebuild, I was SHOCKED that there was *NO* Info in WIS, MicroFilsch, etc., in regards to Shifter repair.

I found a blurry post on a W123 site which I used as a general guide, along with EPC. It seems since the truck was built, the Configuration of the Spring Washers has changed. In EPC, it shows ONE of the Spacer Washers to the "Left" of the Shifter Arms, but this makes it Impossible to insert the Woodard Key/Pin thing-y into the Bearing Base. Soooo, I used the Configuration from the W123 post (who supposedly is a Mercedes Master Mechanic).

Anyway, the bottom line is: The Shifter is now Schweeeeeeeeet!! Feeling just like a NEW shifter!!! Sooooo, I guess the Configuration is correct.

The Install is the Exact Opposite of the Un-Install.

G

Re: Photo DIY- Manual Transmission Floor Shifter Overhaul

I don't have a manual transmission but I enjoyed the writeup.

I'm curious about the special tools: the spreader and the bushing press. Did you already happen to have those, or did you consult the WIS and then order them? You always seem to have the right MB tool for the job -- no better way to do it. There's nothing more irritating than trying to force a tool to perform a job it wasn't designed for.

The Bushing tool, Reportedly, was Designed by a M-B Tech. Technically they are distributed via Stahlwille USA, but they are all over Fleabay.

The Spreader tool? Yes, I was needing to replace the Bushings on the W210. Have used the thing many times, since. Don't know if it is the Heat of the nearby engine, or what... but I've needed to change the Bushings in nearly all of my vehicles.

Between the two toys, it makes this bushing/clip job Silly-Easy.

Hello G-AMG

Do you perhaps still have the part numbers of the parts required to do this overhaul?

RE: Photo DIY- Manual Transmission Floor Shifter Overhaul

Doug, Hey!

Ja... It's been a long time. I nosed around, and found the 'Plastic' portions of the Repair. I ended up buying new EVERYTHING on the Internal Bits & Pieces catagory, including Washers, Spring, Bushings, etc...

Here are the 'Plastic' pieces:

115-267-06-76: rectangular-ish washer (30)
115-267-22-50: dampening bushing (13)
115-267-07-50: tophat bushing (23)

According to the BLow-up Diagram on this post:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/390988-w123-4...

This was the original post I used as my 'Guide':

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/general-information/335351-manu...

Hope this helps.
