FPR / Fuel Pump Relay Location on early W463

Where is the fuel pump relay located on early W463 Gs?

I assume that the 300GE and 500GE both have it located under the dash on the driver's side? I believe there is a fuse box there?

Thanks again in advance.

94 300GE - under the glove box, behind the fuse panel.

RE: FPR / Fuel Pump Relay Location on early W463

picture of the fuel pump relay (003 545 24 05) on my '91 GE300, located as said above: underneath the dash on the passengers side behind the fuse box

fuel pump relay location

fuel pump relay

if you connect pin 87 with pin 30 (on the connector when the relay is removed) the fuel pump should work. Otherwise there is a problem with the pump

Relay PIN layout:

31: Ground

15: 12V from the contact

87: Pump

50: 12V from the starter

30: Always 12V

87v: used on models with a second fuel pump ... i think

Re: FPR / Fuel Pump Relay Location on early W463

You need to remove the under-dash panel, which will expose the fuse panel.

Then remove the two screws that hold the fuse panel frame to the bottom of the dashboard, and that will expose the relays behind there. You'll easily see it per David's photo above.

If you do need to replace this fuel pump relay, which is shared with other Benz models (cars) of the era, be sure NOT to buy an aftermarket part. Use the factory MB part, which will be of the best quality.

For a 500GE, your FPR part number is going to be: 003 545 25 05

It is shared with common US (and world) models such as the 560SEC, 560SEL, 420SEL, and so forth.

The current MB list price for this FPR is $33.50 -- WOW, it looks like MB dropped the price of this relay from $78 on January 1st. You are a very lucky guy. You can buy this relay from Tom Hanson at the MB Classic Center, or from MB Asheville for $25 + shipping.

http://www.oediscountparts.com/parts/index.cfm?make=Mercedes-Benz&y...

You can get aftermarket parts from Kaehler or UROparts via AutohausAZ.com for $67 and $29, respectively. These are both JUNK and NOT worth buying. It doesn't look like these aftermarket brands have caught up to the MB pricing.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Gerry

Re: FPR / Fuel Pump Relay Location on early W463

FYI - starting to develop some reliable intelligence that these 8-cylinder relays may no longer be available from MB. This "NLA" status is often presaged by a dramatic drop in price, as has happened here. We have seen this with numerous other parts over the years, where NLA status is accompanied by a dramatic price drop.

The MB Classic parts site already shows this relay as being NLA: http://partssearch.mercedes-benz-classic.com/parts/A0035452505

We'll know more in the coming days. The good thing is that these relays are quite common in other cars, so can be had at wrecking yards and as I mentioned on the aftermarket as a last resort.

The list price for the six-cylinder relays (003 545 24 05) as shown above is $276, and they shown as still being available.

Cheers,
Gerry

At 1/3 of those prices, I can refurbish them for pretty much anything that could go wrong.

Re: FPR / Fuel Pump Relay Location on early W463

Yes, the cracked/broken solder joints that are typically the problem CAN be repaired, and even reliably. For my 560SEC, it's easier just to stock a few spares from cars from the wrecking yard, along with the one new/unused unit that I bought about 5 years ago from the dealer.

I actually did have my original unit die about 5 years ago.

Re: FPR / Fuel Pump Relay Location on early W463

Tom Hanson at the Classic Center today confirmed both the price drop, and the current NLA status of this.

I am betting that it will be back available within 24 months.

What would it take? Open it and re-do the solder on the board?

I bought a used OEM one in great shape to keep in glove box as a spare so I do not have to mess with 'jumper cable 10 AWG to the pins' solution in an emergency.

Would like to have a used one refurbished.

There are none in Austria at the factory either.

Re: FPR / Fuel Pump Relay Location on early W463

Update:
You can get a rebuilt FPR and Klimaange Relay both from Beckmann Technologies. They warranty these items that they rebuild, too.
Highly recommend you get a Felo screwdriver for the two philips screws holding the under dash panel in place.
