Overland NM, AZ, NV, CA to end 2014

Here are a few photos from my continuing journeys out West. The family flew into DAL to pick up the G, with a flat battery on 12/26/14. A long jumpstart to give the PC1500 enough juice to crank. I drove all night through the mundane parts of TX though some nice snow showers and was rolling down through ABQ at dawn. Over the next 2 weeks we hit Chaco Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, Petrified Forest NP, Meteor Crater, Vegas, Mojave Desert, & Joshua Tree. The G is patiently waiting for more adventures in LAS.

Next time I will bring my real camera.

Can't believe I'm just seeing this thread. Great photos Matt - thanks for sharing.

How did the G do on the trip?

That Joshua Tree photo reminds me of the Eagles album cover photo taken in the same location. Take it easy Matt...

Re: Overland NM, AZ, NV, CA to end 2014

I was standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona ...

More photos to come. I had a great couple of days between Pahrump and Las Vegas on a solo adventure last week. I'm in Yuma now, had a great adventure in the Muggins Mountains yesterday and plan on some imperial sand dunes, Picacho Peak Wilderness Today. The G is perfection in stock form however the more I drive trails out West the more I want sliders and bigger tires.

Re: Overland NM, AZ, NV, CA to end 2014

I managed to squeeze in three trips in February. I started out West of Vegas then down south to Yuma and ended East of Vegas. Two solo trips and one Family outing.

That looks like Rocky Gap Road, west of Vegas.  I drove that just after Christmas.  The narrow part was quite entertaining!

It was Rocky Gap Road. Good eye, and great trail. I was solo on that one, without a spotter, I chickend out half way up the waterfall. I can't wait to tackle it completely.

RE: Overland NM, AZ, NV, CA to end 2014

I have been on the road and away from my shop for 8 months and 6K miles now. The Beast was in top form prior to leaving, with fresh synthetics everywhere and a new remodeled cargo platform. Little things go wrong here and there, nothing major but when added up they will take a few weeks at home to sort out. I have some serious trust issues with random mechanics, it was extremely difficult for me to go to Jiffy Lube for an oil change, I followed those kids around like a mother hen with a rag in my hand cleaning greasy fingerprints of a truck that hadn't been washed for thousands of miles of dirt road, watching every movement. Crazy me.

The list:

Rock chip on windshield that turned into a nice livable for now crack as seen in some photos.

Right rear interior door lever, lost the insert that also holds the hinge pin in place, the hinge pin worked loose and it stopped opening the door from within. I fixed that properly in a driveway in Yuma.

My headlights stopped working on high beam, I really don't miss them, even in the desert at night. I'm pretty sure it is a relay.

The keyless entry stopped working again, I have experienced this before and always resolve the problem by resoldering the relay near the K40, it usually lasts about a year. I am hesitant to break out my butane soldering iron in some random parking lot and potentially be stranded if I don't properly make the repair. Using the key is a pain but I'm getting accustomed to it.

My edgestar fridge had a meltdown at the 12V cigarette plug, a weak point on the cheap fridge, replaced properly with a much better plug from Wally World.

Doing some rock crawling solo I touched down lightly on a running board pulling the rubber fairing/ end cap off. I have it, just haven't put it back on... A reminder to be cautious or incentive to get some rocker protection?

I need to buy or borrow a grease gun and lube my shafts and fill the front swivels, not sure if I will carry it along or throw it away.

My BFG AT/KO tires came from Japan mounted on 16s from a forum member. I have always liked this old tire design and have had them on Range Rovers, Fjs, and FJ40s. They are of unknown mileage and age, the sidewalls are getting pretty rough and there is considerable chunking on the tread blocks from the volcanic rocks out west. They are still fine for now however will be replaced with something modern and slightly larger soon for peice of mind due to my solo remote travels.

Not a bad list for a Graz stock, 15 year old truck with 120K miles doing what it was intended with style.

RE: Overland NM, AZ, NV, CA to end 2014

Self discovery.

Driving solo in loose sand still gives me the willies, aired down to 15, high revs, keep momentum... I'm just worried I will loose the edge and be sunk down to the frame around every corner and hillside. Equipped with a small shovel, Cocoamats, tow straps and a buried spare tire I feel dreadfully under equipped for this situation. I could get some maxtrax or sand ladders and feel a little better and I realize the buddy system is my best bet for recovery. I feel like I need to get over my fears and burry my G and extract it myself so I can move on.

Your high beams have almost assuredly died due to the poor quality turn signal switch installed in the 1996-2000 models.   If you install relays now you can probably get the high beams back and save the switch.  If you don't the low beams will be the next to go.

Thank you for the PDF Alan. This project just jumped to the top of my list.

I'll do some searching on the topic.
