Which PSI ratings do we folliow?

Do we follow the PSI ratings in the manual, or on the tire?

Thanks.

Thanks. We've, uh, been going by the ratings on the tires. We'll have to change that.

Re: Which PSI ratings do we folliow?

The best way to find the factory recommended PSI on a Mercedes-Benz is to open the fuel filler flap.
Here is a macro picture of what looks like on my E320.As you can see there are two recommended PSI's one for up to 100 mph and one for over 100 mph .

Not to worry Marsden. The ML has been serviced by the dealer until recently (warranty out, as well as the 4 yr/50k mile maintenence). Wanted to know, for the future.

Good thing you live in Michigan and not in Arizona or Death Valley.  Your tires would have raptured otherwise.

I guess you were doing it the Audi way - "Never Follow"*

Is this only a US marketing thing?

depends. most of the time i go for 35psi.. the tires i have on are not the stock tires so i don't think the diagram on the fuel flap applies.

Most to the tire pressure blow outs in arizona happen when people come from Flagstaff up North, to Phoenix. They have to much air in the tires from Flagstaff which is quite a bit above Phoenix elevation wise ( I want to say its 6,000 feet difference) and is usually about 20-30 degrees cooler or more. so with the combination of altitude and heat expansion going into phoenix BAM.

Driving to and from my friends cabin on 17N I would say its mostly big trucks that have the blowout problem.

Wait after reading mzsmbs's post, does the fuel flap pressure apply only to OEM tires?

Re: Which PSI ratings do we folliow?

Your fuel filler flap should have the right PSI for your tires. In less your tires are bigger then the originally oem tires that came with your ML. Your owner's manual should say what your original oem tires size is .

I think we have the same OEM tire size. It's just that some tires are made differently, and require different PSI.

Re: Which PSI ratings do we folliow?

Oh I don't think 100+ mph is much of an option for those of use with the vintage diesel models.

Ambient temperatures and altitude in fact have a minimal effect on tire pressures.Roughly speaking, the pressure will rise abt 1psi for every additional 10f and less than 0.5psi for every 1000 ft of elevation. So in a no-load situation, the at rest difference maybe 5-6 psi.
The real demon for tyres is under inflation. This causes a drastic increase in movement of the tyre wall under motion and the friction generates sufficient heat to permanently damage the carcas of the tyre and far more susceptible to failure in the event of an impact.
This is the reason that manufacturers advise an INCREASED inflation when the loads on the vehicle are greater due to weight or speed.
Tires in good condition can withstand massive over inflation without failure, but the contact patch and therefore grip is substantially reduced. With a reduced contact patch, uneven and more rapid wear will also occur.
Generally, stick to vehicle manufacturers recommendations, add 2-4psi for each oversize tyre and err on the side of over inflation, never under inflation.

Before I go on any further, any idea on what the stock tires for '02 ML320's were?

We currently have Continental 4x4 Contacts.
