Many smaller European diesels to be discontinued after 2010

Many smaller diesel engines can not achieve the new tight EURO 5 emission limits which take effect in 2010 and have the same limits for gas and diesel engines. Cars like the VW Golf TDI will most likely have to be discontinued without expensive upgrades using soot particle filter and NOx catalyst, which may cost more than the engine itself and also penalise the fuel economy. "The diesel will not be abolished", predicts VW boss Bernd Pischetsrieder. "But it will only survive in large vehicles." Last year 40% of all new vehicles sold in Europe were diesels, up from only 10% in 1990.

RE: Many smaller European diesels to be discontinued after 2010

It’s not all bad news and not that surprising. I have no interest in a diesel VW in particular nor a small car/engine in general – there will still be a good used well maintained E 320 CDI in my future, say 15 years.

Remember your comparing with todays diesel to the new rules in 10yrs. By then diesel should have better performance and better for the enviroment, just look at the bluetec diesel!

if the big oil drought does happen i think there will be a relaxing of the rules to allow bio diesel and SVO vehicles to keep running

RE: Many smaller European diesels to be discontinued after 2010

Back when I was living and working in Italy my Neighbors has an 80's (forget exact year) Fiat Uno diesel.  Was like a 900cc engine...they averaged 75 mpg with it based on my calculations on the Km they got on how many liters of Diesel  (gasolio in italy).  Not fast but darned economical.
