Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

Here is an Amazon link for the Nissen radiator. I have one in my 1997 G300td

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

I replaced the radiator on my 1995 G320 today, using the Nissens unit. The date code on it was W23 2018 (week 23, year 2018).

It fit well, but a couple of notes for my specific G:

1) The upper and lower coolant hose connections were 100% in the correct place. I replaced the upper radiator hose to the water pump housing with a new MB hose when I did the radiator. I need to order and replace the lower radiator hose, I forgot to order that one.

2) The transmission cooler lines (upper and lower) were in the exactly correct places, as well.

3) There were two additional fittings on the passenger side of the Nissens radiator that my original Behr radiator did not have. These Nissens fittings were plugged with red caps, so I just left them alone and left the plugs in.

4) The OE MB Behr radiator had a reinforced neck. The Nissens radiator DID NOT have a reinforced neck.

5) On the Nissens radiator, the hole drilled into the bottom of the radiator frame, to which a clip that holds the metal power steering fluid cooling hard line (I believe that is what it is) to the bottom of the radiator to secure it, is slightly too high (higher hole location than on the Behr radiator). I substituted a new nut (without the original MB clip) that threaded up to the original MB bolt and re-secured it to the radiator bottom just fine.

6) The Nissens radiator does not appear to have a pet-cock; the MB OE Behr radiator had a red plastic pet-cock that allowed the radiator to be drained. I will double check this "for sure" tomorrow before I bolt the front skid-plate back up. I may well be wrong on this.

5) I also replaced the two temperature sensors that screw into the thermostat housing. One of these sensors provides input for the instrument cluster gauge. The other sensor supplies the temp that triggers the two-stage electric fan. My fan had not been working, and the new sensor started it working again, thankfully. This helps with keeping temps under control, obviously.

I took my time and the radiator replacement took about three hours. I drained about 1.5 gallons of coolant from the radiator, and had to mix some new Zerex G-05 coolant in a 50-50 mix with water to replace what I had drained.

All in all, it was a pretty fun job and not too difficult.

Cheers,
Gerry

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

I made a slight error -- the oil cooler portion of the Nissens radiator (which on my G320 is not used), is on the DRIVER'S SIDE of the radiator, not the passenger side. The passenger side has the transmission oil cooler circuit, and that is definitely used on my truck.

I took a couple of comparative photos of the radiator necks, comparing the Behr and the Nissens upper hose necks, and will upload them shortly.

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

Were you able to get the radiator out and back in without disturbing the AC charge?

I'm facing this soon as the driver's side radiator tank is leaking where the oil cooler fitting goes through.  Also the oil cooler lines are getting progressively more porous.   A lucky find dropped a brand new unobtainium factory oil cooler hose (all 10 feet of it) in my hands, so things have been going well so far (he says, before the first wrench is turned).

No problem at all getting the radiator out, and not disturbing the condenser and other stuff. Piece of cake.

Basically lifts right out once you undo the side clips, the two coolant lines and the two transmission cooler lines, and the two metal clips that slide onto the bottom pins at the lower radiator support.

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

Good to know.  The inline 6 makes it hard to get to the oil cooler fittings.  I guess I can take off the various pulleys for some extra room.

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

On my G320, the transmission oil cooler lines (passenger side) were OK -- although the bottom one was a bit more of a PITA because it was inaccessible from below, and required a "stubby" 19mm open-end wrench to access down from above. I can imagine it would be the same for trucks with engine oil cooler connections (driver's side).

The lower radiator hose was also a bit of a PITA, though it was accessible from below.

Of course, the first step (before draining the old radiator) was to remove the skid plate so that everything can be accessed from below.

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

I checked today -- there is no drain pet-cock on the bottom of the Nissens radiator, like there is with the Behr unit.

What a shame! That's a definite negative.

Re: Nissens Radiator on a G500 ?

I guess it just means that you have to drain the Nissens by removing the lower radiator hose ... a mess(ier) proposition than with the Behr.

Here are some views of the old/original Behr radiator from 1994, and the replacement Nissens unit.

New (left) and old (right) radiators, side by side.

Comparison of the non-reinforced upper radiator hose neck of the Nissens (first photo) and the reinforced neck of the Behr (second photo) radiators.

View of the driver's side of the Behr (left) and Nissens (right) radiators, showing the unused engine oil cooler connnection on the Nissens unit. The Behr unit does not have these connections. I left the red shipping plugs inserted in the fittings.

Cheers,
Gerry
