What a pain... Anybody have a wiring diagram for the light swtich?

Anybody have a wiring diagram for the light switch? As you can see I have a small debacle on my hands... in my attempt to gain access to the wires for testing voltage I pulled the back off of the harness. And suddenly!... I have a mess! I don't know how I'm going to get this thing back together...

Hi Erik,
I try to look for a wiring diagram, but only could find that info from a W140 vehicle.
Maybe it will help you....good luck to you

All sorted out...

So in my truck, the conclusion is that the dash switch has an active pin in it for powering reverse fog lights, but there's no wiring for it anywhere whatsoever. I had to get a wire into the switch and then route it all the way to the back. Here's the pin map and the explanation of what's for what.

DISCONNECT the batter before you mess with the switch.

Getting a wire into the switch is a real hassle. I would be tempted to argue that if your vehicle/switch is not already wired, I'd recommend just installing a switch somewhere else. Since I already had the thing torn apart, it went ahead and rigged a way to get a wire into the pin in the switch. If you just want to have a look at what's going on with the wiring, then pull the back cover on the switch harness off, WITHOUT removing the harness from the switch. If you keep the harness on the switch, then the wires tend to stay in the harness because they're supported by the pins. If you pull the harness off the switch and then open the harness, the thing just explodes, so unhook the batter before you do anything actually!

Once I solved how I was going to get a wire into the switch (to power the rear fogs), I routed the wire down the left side interior of the vehicle. From the switch, under drivers the carpeting near the doors, around the inside of the b-pillar, up near the storage compartments under the rear seats, along the joint between the floor and left side of the wheel well, then in a hole to the battery compartment. Rather than routing that wire from the battery area down the hole to the outside/rear of the vehicle, I brought the wires from the reverse and fog lights into the battery area.

I've always liked having two reverse lights, and decided i wasn't willing to regress to having only one, so I bought the combo LED lights on E-bay. I really like them! The picture only shows the rear fog/reverse lights, but I've also bought and installed the surprisingly well-matching brake/park/blinker light housing set. Brakes and blinkers lights are certainly brighter than stock. They all have TÜV approval for road-legal use in Germany.

If you have a truck with one reverse light and one rear fog, I'd really recommend these little LED combo lights for offering you a LOT more reverse light.

Also, if/when you pull the knob off of the light switch itself, it does have the geometry for accepting a little bulb, but when I added the appropriate bulb, it does not light up.

While I was at it I installed an LWR kit, which allows for adjusting the elevation of your headlights. (Hard requirement in Germany)

One interesting side note: I added an extra wire and switch into the system so I can turn on my white reverse lights without being in reverse (can be handy packing the car)... what I learned is that the Parktronic system uses "interesting" logic. That's to say that once there is voltage to the reverse lights, the parktronic system is automatically engaged, regardless of the shifter position.

Wow. So how awesome is that . Nice job. I've always wanted to add a loud car horn in the back for tailgaters and those looking at their phone and about to run into me.

Well Erik, quiet an effort.....

"One interesting side note: I added an extra wire and switch into the system so I can turn on my white reverse lights without being in reverse (can be handy packing the car)... what I learned is that the Parktronic system uses "interesting" logic. When you switch on the reverse light with your new circuitry, you are back feeding the voltage into the existing reverse system, and the rear parktronic is part of it. To get away from that, add a diode to the existing original reverse light wire. Our friend Alan can give you a better info on that.

A really good fix!
Do you have a picture of the new tail light?
Did you go with the "light bar" or "crystal" version of the tail light?

Re: 2000 Europ G500 has no rear fog light... has anyone "fixed" this?

I thought I had a picture with the lights on, but I don't.

There's a few sellers if you look. It also looks like there are some variations which are a little different (slightly different housing or LED configuation).

What I purchased is all from the same manufacturer, so it at least really matches. Also approved for use on German roads. Registered manufacturer/trademark by "Vinstar and Ailead".

Not sure what you mean by crystal version, but I didn't get the smoked versions because that defeats the purpose of me wanting newer/brighter lighting, and looks really "after-market" to me.

I like them because they're brighter. Park lights, brake lights, reverse lights. Never really was a fan of how the original looked. I actually think these look a lot nicer, without looking tacky or particularly aftermarket. Mine have the feature/switch where you can set the blinkers to scroll, but I think that's tacky.

The rear brake/park/blinker lights: Vinstar model # V-200201
I bought them from a german e-bay so this isn't the exact link I used, but looks exactly like what I got.

Hey thanks for the picture!
I have been looking at all of what's available. There are quite a few styles on ebay and Amazon.
I like what you have gone with and feel that it is a good choice for looking correct with the bumper lights completing that appearance.
