It does show its age from time to time, and this time it is in the cockpit where the speedo is acting up and the turn signal control does not work on right hand turns. SPEEDO The MPH speedo (with small KMH) has developed a click where the speedometer jumps. It's the speedo not the cable. Advice Sought: 1. Is this something I can repair, if so, what are the steps? Do I need parts and if so, what part number and who sells them reasonably priced? 2. Does anyone have a spare they don't need? 3. Is this a standard MB part that is used in other models, like sedans of that era. Anyone have any experience with this? 4. Is there a generic speedo that would fit? It has a mechanical ODO in miles (I live in a KM country, but the g-wagon came from the UK), single light to show turn signal (which I could relocate to the dash) and backlighting. 5. Anyone found a reliable vendor of a new or used speedo that is not a silly price? COMBO SWITCH In the last semi-annual inspection, the right turn signal would flash rapidly, but no action at the lights. They told me to fix it before the next inspection. Hazard flasher works, so it's not the bulb or fuse. We took apart the relay, but it seemed OK. It appears to be the unit on the steering wheel. Horn/turn signals/high-low beams/wiper. Eurotruck Importers (http://www.eurotruck-importers.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1079) lists a late model (after chassis number 024324), which appears to not have the horn button. Advice sought: 1. Is this something I can repair, if so, what are the steps? 2. Does anyone have a spare they don't need? 3. I read that the W123 stalk is the same. Anyone have any experience with this? If so, what part numbers do I look for? Does it have the horn button? 4. Is there a difference between RHD and LHD parts (mine is right-hand drive)? 5. Anyone found a reliable vendor of a new stalk that is not a silly price? 6. Would the EuroTruck unit work if I found another way to connect the horn? If yes, any suggestions on how to wire in a horn switch? | ||

I figured after 495k miles I might have to maintain this part a little to keep it going. I'll have to do a little more investigation on the stalk switch side, but I think the "same as w123" thing only applies to the post-82 version of the stalk where the whole steering column cover is really different from our earlier trucks. -Dave G. PS after some looking - and for that same reason (whole different column) the Eurotruck stalk switch won't work on your early style truck. If someone has done an update of the whole driver's side dash cover and column cover and switch to the late style, maybe they could guide you, but I haven't tried that. It would be a worthy update to be able to have access to replacement stalks. The early style one is getting to be unobtanium. I don't have any spare and I don't think they're amenable to disassembly. I think 76-1985. 280E 300D 240D etc... Sorry I just saw you have the switch with the horn. You will not find that on a 123 car. Bruce has pointed you in the right direction.
