Need help repairing a W460 mechanical Speedometer

Can anyone tell me the Part Number and proper name for the white cog that drives the speedometer, as shown in this photo?

And how it is removed and replaced?

There is no Mercedes PArt no for that - the whole instrument itself is the replace unit should anything fail. I would suggest you find an aircraft instrument technician and ask him to repair.

RE: Need help repairing a W460 mechanical Speedometer

It's a very common VDO mechanism. Anyone who repairs or calibrates speedometers will have parts to refurbish them. As Peter says though, no MB parts for the unit. I hope you can find someone local, but if not, these guys have been doing good work for me for years, even things like calibrating the speedometer to exactly match the tires I routinely use.

I have some friends who regularly use this place in California too. They have a very good reputation.

Good luck!

RE: Need help repairing a W460 mechanical Speedometer

I have had good service for VDO locally at Tacoma Speedo, a VDO shop, but I keep these other service centers in mind.

Re: Need help repairing a W460 mechanical Speedometer

The gear is slightly pressed on the axle.
Note the position, and you should be able to gently remove the axle.

I had no chance to let it repaired quickly, and my G is doing severe off road only so low mileage.
I decided to ... cut the gear in the middle, reversed both side and aligned teeth back on the axle.
I know this is some kind of shame and definitely ugly work, but it saved me the meter for the event.
Still working like that years later (but max 1-2000 km a year).

Sadly, no. The gears on this site are flat "spur" gears at the side of the odometer. The gear that gets worn in the g speedometer is the one right at the cable input, as shown in the picture in the original post. It's a worm gear.

Odometer gears encourages a phone call if what you need is not pictured. Have you called them?
Otherwise, according to Hans Hehl, you may be out of luck:

Another resource, if you want someone to rebuild your unit:

I see an electronic speedo in your future, if affordable.

Re: Need help repairing a W460 mechanical Speedometer

Several years ago I had the telephone number of a mechanical speedometer repair in Greensboro, NC. Lost the number, but you can contact Chuck Creegar at: 888-359-2578 as he is the one that gave the info. (MBenz of Winston Salem, NC)
