2019 G review

Interesting at least for the fairly detailed ins & outs provided, even if some of the opinions aren't to my taste…

Re: 2019 G review

I got to check out a 2019 today at a dealer in the Philadelphia area. It’s very luxurious. I know it’s a somewhat wider chassis than the previous generations and the interior feels that way. Sitting in the driver seat, there is considerably more space between driver and passenger. I got to crank it and here it run (seemed like it idled high for a long time) but was not able to drive it bc it was already sold. This dealer said they have already sold 4.

Agreed 110%! I couldn't get past the first 5 minutes before I shut it down.

Re: 2019 G review

Regardless of the commentator, the info was good.
The local MBenz dealer had a 2018 sitting in the used section with 2000 miles on it.
I asked about why? Was it too stiff for the new owner?
Nope came the answer, they wanted the new 2019.
I for one at my age can see why the new 2019 has better appointments, but...
I am not a fan of the 400+ hp engines and I do not care for the hot rod exhausts that even my 2016 has.
If I were younger, and had not made the mistake of giving up my 2002 G, I would buy the 2019.

RE: 2019 G review

Wow. I was incredulous to say the least that the chassis was different. But then I found this on autotrader.com:

"...There are only five parts that carry over to the new 2019 G-Class from its predecessor: The door handles, spare tire cover, sun visors, headlight washer nozzles and a bracket somewhere you can't actually see. ..."

I guess that's a form of good news, that MB is still investing that heavily in the G, even if the changes range from unnecessary to nauseating. But that's just me. Plenty of people must like it or they wouldn't be doing it. May she live long and prosper.

Is it still a "463" or is there a new chassis series?

It's still a 463, although that surprised me. With as much change as has been done, I would have expected 464.

I have seen a G63, did not drive it, but the only bit I liked was the door handles. The rest is not at all to my taste. Like making jeans in velvet... just wrong.

RE: 2019 G review

February Motor Trend article says the 2019 G550 can not have the center diff locked unless the transfer case is in low range. Does anyone know why this was done? Is 2019 the first year for this?

Hi Dave,
This is not the first year for this control, the 2013 and 2014 G’s also must be in low range to lock the diffs, perhaps 2015 too but not sure. I personally never had an issue with it, cannot say exactly why this is.

RE: 2019 G review

Thanks Michel! I didn't know it went that far back. I agree, probably not a big factor, just makes me curious. One of those, "If I had 30 minutes with an MB engineer" questions.

All the best,

Re: 2019 G review

Was at the stealer on Friday and asked about the new G350d as well. They told me that they have several cars pre-ordered without even knowing the pricing and if I want a car built to my exact specification (all the pre-orders I have seen included the adaptive suspension I don´t really want), it will be delivered in early 2020...

RE: 2019 G review

Anyway, Dave I agree, the frame is much different. I don't like it. Also my 2011 G550 must be in low-range to use the lockers, Damn. My Land Cruisers lock in hi and lo, oh well I still enjoy them.

Oh wow. I agree. Fewer through-welded round tubes makes me sad. I'm sure it's fine and has lots of good rationale behind the ways it's really better. But it still makes me sad.
