Iceland - ship the G ?

Howdy,

my wife an me are considering a visit to Iceland, go hiking climbing etc. for a few weeks

Does it make sense to ship the G to Iceland.?
Anyone done this, or better try to find a 4-wheel rental there ? Other hints for Iceland are welcome :-)

Thanks
Oskar

Re: Iceland - ship the G ?

Not for a few weeks. Hard to justify costs and risks for only a few weeks worth of use. Unless you plan to fly it over and back. In which case you could buy a G for the cost of air freight.

I was considering exactly the same trip plan.  Two Gs will fit into one container, but we probably won't do it this year.

Re: Iceland - ship the G ?

Rental 4x4 in Iceland is hugely expensive - and if you want to do some of the few serious pistes is of no use. On most of the tracks fording rivers is the big issue. My first two trips was back 10 years ago was in a first gen VW Touareg, did some of the nicer tracks and was lucky that the spring and summer where very dry, - so not so much water in the riveres.

The several last trips was in my G, and I could not have done the more serious stuff without it. Maybe your fist visit could bee on the south-coast, most of the common touristy stuff can be reached in ad 4x2.

So I would ship and don´t think about it - I would suggest at least 3 weeks.

Se my website for some photos from Iceland.

(I traveled by ferry from Denmark to Iceland - a 48 hour trip).

Re: Iceland - ship the G ?

I think Trusti rents a G-class for travel in Iceland, and does guiding as well.
http://northtravel.is/

There is a ferry from Denmark that takes 2-3 days, many adventurer vehicles on this boat.

There is also shipping from Halifax and Portland to Iceland, I have not checked costs as this is at least 3-4 years out for me

I'd be up for it, but it isn't happening anytime soon.

Re: Iceland - ship the G ?

I’ve been dreaming about the same trip, more or less. In my vision, an importable G would be purchased in Europe, enjoy a leisurely shake down to a RORO port, spend a week or to in Iceland before shipping to the USA.

Ferry Denmark/Iceland: http://www.smyrilline.dk

As stated earlier it takes 48 hours with a short pause on The Faeroe Islands. As Iceland is getting more and more touristy you usually need to buy a ticket some 6 months ahead.

Re: Iceland - ship the G ?

Is it about travelling or driving the G?

All the highland trails were made by ordinary unmodified 4x4 like jeep, LR Series etc.
The simplest and most affordable solution is to rent a dead reliable Suzuki Jimny. Solid axles, low range, coil suspension and designed for off highway use.
The Jimny is slow but capable of all the usual highland routes. Due to light weight it must be driven with care across rivers and you might have to plan critical river crossings according to weather and time of day.

Do NOT follow a set itinerary, -travel according to weather and forecast. To have that flexibility you must be able to camp. Avoid the "do the island in a day" syndrome.
If the focus is on the interior highland it is easiest from mid july to mid august. -That is also the worst period to travel in the lowlands and the SW is really crowded.
If you are not focusing on the interior highland, - you can drive any car.

If more than two are travelling or you want to ride with more metal, -rent a LR Defender ot Hilux. Stay away from all modern plastic SUV without low range.

Or buy a 4x4 -listed here with tire size from 33" - 35"

It´s not about the boat.

Find Trausty Berglund in AkureiryHe is as fine a gentleman as you can find.
He uses his G to carry around tourists and knows Iceland like the back of his hand.

We have wonderful souveners of our time with him last February.

You are right about Trausti Bergland. He is exceptionally well versed about the NE Highland, North of Vatnajökull Icecap.

Re: Iceland - ship the G ?

Just look at the avatar! For those extra-deep river crossings, keep two boats strapped to the roof so that when the car sinks you can paddle the boats to bring the car across the river.

This thread is a perfect example of the great people on this forum. No nonsense (except me!), super-practical advice and a very high "first hand knowledge based truth-to-BS" ratio.

Oskar I wish the two of you a fabulous trip. Also great to hear from so many solid long time friends in one place.

I could count on you Dave to get to "the bottom of things". Floating on top of the snow is not guarantied either. -Therefor you keep the skis on top when crossing frozen water

Must admit that I sold the G but still visit this informative forum occasionally when I need info about the M104 engine in my Mercedes powered home brewed Korean skilift.

Hi Dave,

thanks a lot. All the best to you and family!

Well, maybe a G meeting somewhere in CO ( or close) might be due sometime. I would be happy to pitch in and make some original Bavarian bratwurst :-)

The Iceland trip will not happen this year. To be honest - if I add up want we would need to spent for what we would like to do ... makes me think 3 times

Anyways, did you know we have been Nepal ?
