Re: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

just a guess, but I'd say to look for a brake line leak on the right side somewhere

then the brakes would not come back - but they do
maybe a sticking caliper
maybe the ABS unit

Re: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

hi Harald, I had similar problem, ques its completelly different to yours but. My lovely dog love piss on my left front Wheel , specialy front left which is out of wall where i parking car. This caused slight corrosion, sometime also on rear which is drum, on my baby so nothing to do. Every next driving start with almost locking of left front brake first braking, then i make sst plate cover over the Wheel. looks as police boot, but its working.I use G just as weekend warior, or how to say "On any Sunday"

Your isue will be probably sticking piston.Try change fluid , blow more volume run through just to be sure no air is there.
Then no other action then take out brake pads and with helper try how pistons still move.

Re: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

I will open the right wheels tomorrow
fluid change came to my mind as well - has been many years without

I have been in a wheelchair for almost 2 years and have not been able to do the necessary TLC

Re: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

Interested in what you find. My new to me 03' G500 is doing something similar. For me, it only occurs when I start braking with a quick stab at the brake pedal which will initially pull slightly to the left and then straighten out quickly the deeper I get into the pedal. A bit disconcerting but never feels uncontrollable. If I gently start braking it will remain in a dead straight line and not pull left. Odd, my first thought was that it might be the BAS system that applies extra force in "emergency braking" situations that might be distributing the power in a weird way when I initially depress the pedal a little too quickly.

Re: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

In my experience BAS kicks in quite violently and won't let go until you get off the brake pedal.  "Thrown into the seatbelt" braking.  BAS operates on the brake booster and mechanically stomps on the brake pedal for you by actuating the booster fully.

I would expect that Harald's problem is caliper corrosion/stickiness.   MB recommends a two year flush cycle on all brake and locker systems.  Whether they are used or not.  The problem is moisture being absorbed into the fluid.  Not as big an issue down in La Paz due to low relative humidity, but still needs to be attended to.

Harald, good to hear that you are getting around more!

Re: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

today my "reset" (stepping on the brakes very hard) did no longer work
so I had to be very careful around town
then, after driving for 30 minutes, the system normalized and worked fine

will take it for another test drive

front right disk looks nice and shiny, indicating that the pads are engaging
but not as hard as the left

Re: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

Maybe just a little sticky from sitting and not being driven. My 280GE brakes were draqging a little and felt uneven the first couple months as well. Now they are fine, I did nothing except to burn a couple tanks of gas.

Re: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

Buy a brake hone and then hone the calipers. (not very expensive,) You obviously have a sticking piston. The job is actually very easy.
Be careful when waving the air hose over the inlet, as it will most definitely mash your fingers when the piston comes out.
Keep your fingers away from the pistons.
Getting the air bled out is the tough part.

Boy, I don't know if I would go grinding away on the Caliper Bore with a Hone. WIS sounds like the Pistons/Bores are pretty darn 'Delicate', as noted in attachment.

Re: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

I have gone through all the manuals and done some reading
early 463 calipers were rebuildable - 2000 and later are not

still searching for the cause

will start with replacing the fluid

Just because it's easy to do, I'd check for damage to the hub, bearings, or play in the wheel hub. The only symptom of my G's right front hub being in six pieces was a long pedal travel.

Good luck Harald!

Re: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

so, finally opened up the patient
pistons in caliper are moving freely
however, I could not bleed any of the 3 bleeders
turning on engine, stepping brake - pistons are not moving forward

looks like no brake pressure gets to the front right wheel

the only thing between the master and the brakes is the ABS unit

now what?

RE: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

did some reading
sounds like the ABS pump has one or more sticking solenoids
not changing the brake fluid will do that for you
I have never changed the fluid in 15 years
new ABS pump around $1,400 - used around $70

I'll try compressed air before I order the part

I have wondered how rebuildable those are.  Can't hurt to try.

RE: 2002 G500 brakes pulling hard

several examples of repair on youtube
but mainly it is the circuit board with pins that need re-solder (like the K40 issue)
haven't seen anyone going into the solenoids

today I took the line from front right off the ABS pump
the line is clear
so, it is inside the pump

I remember one of the video showed corrosion on the valve parts
as to them, fresh brake fluid has anti corrosion properties that go away with time
since you have different metals inside the ABS pump
since bathed in a fluid, particles move from one to the other - causing buildups that make the valves stick

so, tomorrow I will drain the block of the ABS pump completely and bathe it in penetrating oil
if that does not work, I will use compressed air

the line to each wheel has 3 solenoids
the one allowing fluid to go back to the reservoir is open as I was able to push back the pistons easily
but I can not suck fluid from the reservoir to the wheel
that solenoid is stuck shut - unless it is an electrical problem and the solenoid does not get any power to open

we will see
