Question: Issue with Gear Engagement

I've been having an issue for the past few months with my 1995 G320, with regard to it going into gear easily.  Let me explain.

It's not the transmission -- it's either the transfer case or the front differential.  What's happening is when I don't drive the G for 2 or 3 days, when I start it up and put it into DRIVE (or REVERSE), the transmission goes into the proper gear, but there is a resistance to either forward or rearward motion.  Sometimes when I "rock" the truck back and forth a few times, it will engage with a metallic "Pop" sound of two gears that are out of alignment meshing, and then it is OK.

If I haven't driven the truck say for 5 days, then it is VERY difficult to get it to go forward or reverse. I put it in gear and literally have to gently apply the throttle until it overcomes the resistance of the gears meshing, and pops, and then it's fine.

There is no issue at all after this happens -- no bad noises or problems. If I don't drive the truck for a day or two, it's fine.  This issue happens after 2-3 days of not driving it.

I don't like this, and it obviously isn't good for the gears. Does anyone know what the problem could be?  Any ideas on things to check?  I haven't seen any obvious leaks of fluid/lubrication from the diffs or transfer case, though I haven't checked the levels.

Thoughts?  Anyone had an issue of this type?

Cheers,
Gerry

RE: Question: Issue with Gear Engagement

Are you sure this isn't one or more brake pads or shoes rusting on?  It happens to the parking brake on our Tesla.

X2 on the parking brake. Try leaving it the 2 or 3 days without the parking brake on and see if it exhibits the same problem.

Re: Question: Issue with Gear Engagement

I took the parking brake off and we're supposed to have a big snowstorm coming in this afternoon. I'll report back in a few days, hopefully the parking brake is all it is. Again, I appreciate the suggestions. Should have thought of that myself !

I started up the G-wagen today (Monday) after not driving it since Friday morning Jan 11.  It does indeed appear that the parking brake is the culprit, as there was zero resistance when I put the truck in gear and started rolling.

So, my next question is, do the rear pads need replacing (re-lining?) and perhaps the rear drums replacing?  It appears I can get them from MB for well under $100 apiece, so the drums are not too expensive.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the suggestions on the issue being the parking brake.  I'm glad it wasn't something more significant/costly.

Cheers,

Gerry

Re: Question: Issue with Gear Engagement

The are probably just fine.  There are rubber inspection plugs in the backer plate that will let you see how thick the linings are.

It could be that the auto adjusters are frozen up and your brake shoes are not doing any braking.  That would make for cold wet drums when parking.  The correct resting gap is (going from memory) 0.2mm.

Re: Question: Issue with Gear Engagement

Call Porterfield. They will re-line them. Porterfield brake compound gives me G55 brake feel in the 500GE, even with drums in the rear. Worth every penny for Porterfield pads.
