94 320 GE W463 Cold Start Issue

Hi All,

First time posting here in P3.

I've been fortunate to run into a 1994 G 320GE in pretty good shape last year and make it my first G to boot!

Over the last couple of months, however, I've started to have an issue during starting.
I've had the issue of the engine stalling during cold start. If I try to start it right away, it will start after igniting; i.e. it starts but after a second or two it stalls.

Using the engine heater for about 20 minutes solves the issue and the engine starts without stalling and no problems. Other than that the car runs smooths; on and off road.

Having to use the engine heater every time is normal practice? Even with ambient temperatures above 15 degC?

Many thanks in advance for your inputs.

Cheers

Re: 94 320 GE W463 Cold Start Issue

Hi Dutch,

Indeed I am to some extent; I'm located in The Netherlands.

Some additional info: I managed to start it relatively quickly (less than 5 minutes) by turning the key to the "ON" position 3-5 times and waiting each time about 10 seconds. Afer doing that the car started without stalling.

This makes me think that there might be some fuel pressure issue during the start sequence.

I have also noticed that the RPMs go up to about 1250 when the egine first cranks over, but then drop down to 500 when idling. Is this the expected amout? I've been reading around and some mention 700 RPM as standard idling value.

When is the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Not sure.
Unfortunately no information is on the filter housing either.

If the filter is the issue, I would suspect to have starting issues also when the engine is hot, but that is not the case.
