Has anyone here owned/driven a G500 and a G with Turbo Diesel?

Has anyone here owned/driven a G500 and a G with Turbo Diesel? I am thinking of switching from the G500 to a 90s turbo diesel G. Would really like to hear from someone who is familiar with both as a daily driver.Thank you.

Yes, I have both a LWB 1999 G500 and a 1997 G300td SWB.

First, nothing beats the V8. Fuel economy much better with the om606a, maybe 50% better. The 300 is short wheel base so it drives much more nimble. Both really nice cars, but if I had to pick one it would be the G500.

I'm aware this is not the comparison you asked for, and I hope not to confuse the issue. I drive a 2000 G500 and a well sorted 88 230ge. I agree, the 500 is the much more useable vehicle, especially on long journeys loaded with family etc. Take the long journeys out of the equation though, I enjoy driving the 230 more, in a well worn set of sneakers way. Weird eh.

Re: Has anyone here owned/driven a G500 and a G with Turbo Diesel?

Hello,

i had a 350Td, a 290Td.
I drove a lot the 300Td Om606.

And now i have the G500.

So, very short:

The G500 ist the king of the G's.

A littlebit longer:

less power, less comfort, less extras, but generaly more Km / mph by the diesels.
Ok, they need 3-6 liter less on 100km, but this is nothing, if you felt the luxury and the sound of the V8.
G350 , nice 6 cylinder sound, but weak with the old transmission, and 463 drivetrain.
G300, much better, but need about 15-25 liter / 100km, not too much different to the G500.
G290Td, i loved it , W460 drivetrain, so light and easy to drive, also with the weak engine.
Very simple machine.

The G400V8 is the worst engine ever
As new it was strong, but in the G-amboree team, my co-orga invested about 30.000-40.000 Euros in 5 years...
The newer model drive my friend, the 320Cdi: EGR problem, Turbo problem, incejction problem.

So, in Europe most of us drives diesel, but a G500 is a better choice...

Thank you all for the responses. I have always had my heart set on a turbo diesel G so it is good to hear your real world opinions. We had 1992 Mercedes 300TD Station Wagon that went well over 400,000 miles so have wanted to get a G with the same vibe/reliability but sounds like the G500 is the most liveable version.

Should have fixed the leak in your tank.  I've averaged 12.1 l/100km over a span of 198K miles.  Including substantial amounts of off-road.  It is still a lot of fuel though: 10133 gallons.

That would be nice, but I like my power/economy tradeoff.  I'd try a switch to an OM651, but the installation hassle just isn't worth it.

It is / was a good option, from Steyr Engine. 110KW, 320Nm. Plug & play.

The RPM band is in the wrong place for older Gs.  Also, where would one source parts?
