Cabin air filter

G’day all.

Is there a cabin air filter that can be replaced on a 1999 model W463.

Over the years there has been so much sand and dust go down the main air box behind the engine that any recirculating filter must be clogged by now.

The A/C is marginal on a good day, any improvement in a Middle East summer would be a welcome bonus.

I have always needed to cut my own. There is a shared unit with the Audi A3.

Re: Cabin air filter

No experience with this one, but seems like it would do a pretty good job filtering dust-

RE: Cabin air filter

Thanks for the replies, at the moment I am more trying to find out if there is another filter already fitted that’s behind the dash somewhere that maybe clogged and restricting airflow.

There is not. The only thing that could be restricting airflow would be trash clogging up the fins of the evaporator coil.

RE: Cabin air filter

Thanks Dutch I suspected that would be case and in a perfect world I would get the evaporator removed and cleaned but I suspect this would need most of the dash to be stripped out and removed for access.

Re: Cabin air filter

If you open the hood all the way to the hood, climb up on the engine and look down into the air intake. Likely there is a fair bit of dust and some vegetative debris in there. This can be vacuumed out with a good strong shop vac and get any fine stuff that may be still be caught in the evaporator.

I have a couple of the filters shown above. They are aftermarket and can be self made as well. I got mine from GfG when I visited their shop in 2017. Also sold by fourbyfourclub, frontrunner, and ORC.

Re: Cabin air filter

Chuck- how well do these fit, since they don't have the plastic on the sides like the fourby custom piece?

Re: Cabin air filter

I am curious to see how this works and where it fits as well. The early 463 (300GE) has pretty much the same cabin air intake as all G-class 1979-2000

Re: Cabin air filter

This is just the wrong part for a pre-MBUSA model.  It is square and the opening is generally rectangular with two rounded edges.  I'll measure and see if it can be cut down to the correct size.

Re: Cabin air filter

Looking at the intake, I think you *might* be able to just set the filter in there. Add some weatherstrip to seal better?

But Alan, you're right- this is the part for the 2002+ cabin filter.

I ordered a $17 one from NAPA- I'll let everyone know if it fits ok or not, they'll let me return if it doesn't.

At the very least it will help debris not fall into the fresh air intake.

Re: Cabin air filter

Well that's a no-go. Totally different size and plus anything paper wouldn't hold up since that area is exposed to water.

So seems we are stuck with the Frontrunner or Fourbyfourclub filters. I also don't see any evidence in EPC that there are any factory options.

Re: Cabin air filter

I bought one from Vlad as well. I had to trim a little but it worked well in my Europa.

Re: Cabin air filter

Looks like a foam filter.  Is it oiled? Or, what keeps fine dust from getting through?

Re: Cabin air filter

Yes, seems oiled. From the factory there is nothing right? Only other option I found was front runner. It was even more expensive.
