Push the entire light assembly to the right and then the left edge will come loose from the headliner.

The switch is just held in with some fragile clips.  If they break on removal, you can just glue it into place.

I have an extra switch if you need one, actually I have a couple extra...

Same as the 124 sedan switch and dome light housing

Re: How to replace the Sunroof switch? Model Year 2000.

Otiswesty, Thanks for the offer... Unfortunately, I had already bought the replacement.

For general info, my switches up and down functionality had stopped working. Forward and backward still worked. Manu years ago my roof mechanism had broken/jammed (super expensive and fickle mechanism it took me a while to fix) so I was hoping it was just the switch.

AlanMcR's instructions are exactly right, it was actually hardest to get it out in the first place. Once out, I had no trouble getting the pieces pulled apart to refit the switch... That's to say nothing broke, reassembled and now it's working well again.

It was interesting pulling the assembly out and see what's behind there. Some useful space actually.

I was finally was able to correct the alignment of the red plastic piece that's back-lit as a fasten seat belt indicator. It had always been slightly out of alignment and showed white light through.

The little grating that looks like a speaker outlet is empty. I suppose it was originally intended to house a hands free microphone. One could easily wire in a secret video recorder for catching someone who has broken into the vehicle.

How did you determine it was the switch? My forward and back works as well, up down doesn't. No weird noises so hopeful it's the switch.

Eric- how much for the switch?

On my G320, once we got the sunroof working, back and forth worked fine but not the pop up. Pop up function also has to do with motor and cable alignment. We spent quite some time going back and forth tooth by tooth on the adjustment wheel. In the end we replaced the switch and it worked fine with the new switch.

With my Camptop, I have substituted a blanking plate for the sunroof switch. No more stained head liner either.

Re: How to replace the Sunroof switch? Model Year 2000.

I had intentionally not used my sunroof for many years with the fear of something going wrong, probably the switch all along.

Eventually, curiosity got the best of me. It was more clear this time around that forward, backward and reaching the home position was no problem. It simply wasn't going up and down... which in reality is simply the switch telling the drive mechanism to go further forward from the home position to pop the sunroof upwards. Oddly enough, as I was wiggling/jiggling the thing to swap the switch out, I actually got the switch to operate one fully pupping it upwards and then back down to the home position. So the switch could probably be disassembled and repaired, but I don't have time for that.

I paid €45 for the switch. I live in Germany now. I've recently imported my vehicle from California so I'm (finally after 6 years hear) putting some time/money into the vehicle.

Yeah, my headliner is holding up still, but it looks like hell. We'll see how the professional cleaning goes next week. Fingers crossed the fabric doesn't just separate from the headliner while the guy is cleaning it.

Try Folex and a micro fiber towel to clean the headliner. Although I'd guess you won't find it overseas. I've also had Simple Green work almost as well.
