Possible Cluster repair/replacement 300GE

I am trying to fix my cluster as the odometer has suddenly stopped counting. I am aware it may not be possible to get an exact replacement but it will be helpful if I can get another model very much like mine that I can use some parts to fix mine. I got one of ebay and even though it looks close on the outside, the components are completely different inside. Any ideas on what to buy or if someone knows where I can get a replacement cluster for a 300GE that'll be great.

Re: Possible Cluster repair/replacement 300GE

It's highly likely that the plastic odometer gears inside the speedo (that control the odometer) have lost teeth and failed. This is a fairly easy job to replace the gears, once you remove and disassemble the cluster.

There are several sources for new gears. One is odometergears.com

Another one is Garagistic.com, I believe.

A HOW-TO on replacing the odometer gears is here: https://www.500eboard.co/forums/index.php?threads/how-to-replacing-o...

Re: Possible Cluster repair/replacement 300GE

Hi
That was very useful. The only thing to do is pull the cluster out and count the gears so I can get the correct set.
I wish there was a simple way around that one.

Re: Possible Cluster repair/replacement 300GE

Good luck! For the 300GE and the M104-based G320s, all of which use a W124 instrument cluster, the normal W124 procedures for cluster removal and gear replacement should work just fine.

As you say, the odometer gear size/teeth will need to be checked to see if there are differences from the W124. Hopefully they are the same, and the standard W124 "off the shelf" odometer gears will work just fine.

Good luck, and please keep us in the loop as to what you find, and what happens. This should be a pretty quick job to do. I did a gear replacement on my 560SEC earlier this year and it wasn't a big deal at all to do.

Cheers,
Gerry
