Instrument cluster needles stuttering at start-up/shut-down? Solved.

If you (AlanMcR?) have the jittering/stuttering problem with any needles on your instrument cluster (during key on and off) you just need to solder a 100-150 ohm resistor across the offending gage leads. You may need to experiment with the orientation of the resistor. I found this link during my digging online.

Also, the backlights for the cluster are all easily replaceable for those that don't know.

I had shaking oil needle several years ago. Used 150 Ohm, then I had to change to 250Ohm 3 months ago. Next time, I will replace the stepping motor all together.

Great find!  How did I miss that in my searches?  I'll try that soon.

Thanks!

That fix actually worked!

No more 5 seconds of vibrating needle before the IC started working.  Yay!

Hi Alan, Would you happen to recall into which orientation you soldered the resistor?

Only the motor that is doing the vibrating needle dance needs attention.  There are four solder points for each drive motor.  The resistor mounts diagonally across two of the points.  Unfortunately, it appears that it is a 50/50 shot as to which of the two possible orientations is the correct one.  I've forgotten which way worked.  If you have lots of patience and it was the speedo, I will be opening it up again to reposition the needle.  But that is probably a week away.

Test before re-assembling, also verify that the needle is pointing correctly.  Mine was off a uniform 3mph across the scale, and that is getting on my nerves.
