CV Joint grease -- quantity

I am replacing the grease on the swivel ball and doing the seals and wheel bearings at the same time. I got this grease A001 989 34 5111 from MB. It fits into the standard dispenser.
Will just the one be okay for both wheels or do I need one each?

RE: CV Joint grease -- quantity

800 grams each side. That is swivel ball grease, not CV Joint grease.

Dutch

How do I get all the dirty black grease already in there? Surely it's wrong to mix the fresh grease with the 10+ years old one?
Will be good to know your opinion.

Disassembly of the hub is the only way to remove the old grease.

If it's dirty and black, it's a probable sign that the CV joint boots on the half axles have failed. To replace them also requires disassembly; and replacing the boots is not an easy job. The CV joint grease inside the CV joint boots is not the same as the grease used to fill the swivel balls.

Actually, since the 17/12/09 WIS Revision? They have decreased the specified volume down to 500 grams, for the Swivel Ball Housing.

RE: CV Joint grease -- quantity

And the only way to know that the cv joint boots on the other half has failed is to disassemble. What type of grease does that one need. The red type used for the wheel bearings?

Re: CV Joint grease -- quantity

"My" understanding of the Factory CV Joint grease? Is: GKN LOEBRO C.V. Joint Grease

I've never seen a 'Specified Quantity' of CV Joint Grease, although the CVJ KITS from various vendors look like they come with *TWO* of the 80g Packets, *PER SIDE*.

The WHEEL BEARINGS *AND* the Swivel Ball Housing grease? *BOTH* use the Fuch Renolit MP 150. Under a M-B Part# it is

001 989 34 51 10.

To pack the Wheel bearings, AND have the 500g , per side for housing?? I would get 3 of the 400g tubes.

Or?? If you want to spend the cash, get the Tub, like I did...

Re: CV Joint grease -- quantity

To be clear there is a special CV grease that belongs inside the CV boot. The grease that goes into the housing is just there to seal the swivel ball seal and keep water out.  Any light colored "waterproof" grease will work.  The different grease colors are designed to give you notice when the CV boot fails.

Clear gloppy grease on the swivel ball? Normal if in moderate quantity.

Black runny grease on the swivel ball? The CV boot is gone, and if you don't fix it, the CV will go soon.

The temptation is to fill the swivel ball with CV grease, figuring that if the boot breaks, the outside grease will keep it lubed.  That doesn't work because the spinning CV will throw all of the grease away from it.

Re: CV Joint grease -- quantity

Does the 2009 WIS grease quantity update specify which axles this applies to? The reason is that very early axles did not have the seal/ bush  on the sideshaft so if there was little grease in the hubs dirt and water could get into the axle tubes . Having  a  hub full of grease will reduce the risk of dirt ingress.
