G500 leaning to the right

Hopefully there is some new info available. Have been working on a friends 2014 G500 RHD recently and it is lower on the right by 20mm. We replaced the shocks (Koni) a few weeks ago. This made no difference. Also replaced the rear springs (Now White 1 stripe) thinking that the right rear spring might have been a bit tired. Measured before and after, and although the G is 20mm higher at the rear the difference in height left to right is still 20mm.

Have found quite a bit of info on the web, that seems to suggest that some of the G's shipped like that from the factory and the only way to fix this is to fit spacers back and front to the side that is lower, to correct this.

Any other suggestions please? Or is this still the recommended fix

RE: G500 leaning to the right

It's not uncommon. In the other parts of the world who have left hand drive, the lean is usually to the left.

There have been some who said that jacking the low side of the frame up so the wheels on that side are hanging off the ground. Then loosen the two bolts on the thrust arm at both axles, and shake each one a bit to allow it to drop. Retighten and retorque the two bolts on each axle. Lower the jacks; and, hopefully the lean has been corrected.

I have not tried this myself, but have been told that it helps to eliminate or minimize the lean.

Re: G500 leaning to the right

Dutch- a dumb question- can you point out which two bolts you are referring to? Pic would be helpful.

Then the next question would be, what's the torque spec for re-tightening?

The whole of SA is going in to lockdown tonight at midnight. I will report back after that. Cannot get the G to my place now.

The two #80 bolts on the thrust arm #10. There are two thrust arms on the front axle and two thrust arms on the rear axle.

Jack up the low side frame of the G so that the wheels on the low side side are hanging in the air. Loosen and tighten the two bolts on the front axle and the rear axle as described above.

Re: G500 leaning to the right

Hi,
I have the same problem with my 2014 G350, left hand drive.
Lean is about 20mm to the left.
Had also thoughts about changing the springs.
If you have done this bolt loosening/tightening job please give a feedback.
In my opinion it will not help and 20mm spacers front and rear are the right way to go.
Regards

It may or may not help, but it's an easy and no cost method to try first.

My opinion is that springs will not make a difference. If you are set on trying springs, just swap sides and see what happens.

The technique is something I came across in an microfiche (the following is from memory).
1. Put on a lift. wheels off the ground
2. loosen the four bolts, 2 in front, 2 in rear for the droopy side
3. strike the control arm in a downward direction near the two bolt attachment point with a dead blow hammer several times
4. retighten bolts
5. lower
6. drive and remeasure.

I have tried it on two g-wagens of mine. some relief, but not the amount I was looking for. It is worth a try in my opinion.

I have ordered spacers a week ago and they will soon be installed.

Re: G500 leaning to the right

Hello Folks

Just an update. The bolt loosening/tightening exercise did not make a noticeable difference. Ended up adding 20mm spacers RR and RF. The G is now running level.
