Transfer Case Seal Leaking?

Well I finally had a chance to crawl under the new 2014 G550 and do my own drive train inspection. Everything looks fine except for the rear transfer case seal which looks like it might be leaking a bit. Is a little "weeping" normal or is there a potential issue? My old TC never leaked a drop after a changed the seals. What do you think?

RE: Transfer Case Seal Leaking?

Flooby,

I had what looked like a weep/leak from the TC on my 2002 G500. I went so far as to order new seal. Prior to seal replacement I used a degreaser and pressure washer to clean the area. Long story short after many weeks no signs of leak /weep. I think I may have had an overfill situation at some time in past which came out the vent? Might want to pressure wash real well and check again. If nothing else you will have cleaner work area in event it is seal.

RE: Transfer Case Seal Leaking?

Thanks! I would do that, but the truck is a CPO and I'm just trying to determine if it would be worthwhile to take it in to the dealer. I have H&R spacers on the truck which I would have to remove for the service visit. But if the seal is indeed leaking, I want it to be their problem, not mine. I have done a TC seal on my previous G and I would prefer not to have to do it again.

RE: Transfer Case Seal Leaking?

Showed the photo to the dealer tech. He said MB will only cover the leak if it is dripping onto the floor. I will have to park the G for a few days and see if I get a drip.

Re: Transfer Case Seal Leaking?

I bought a brand new Tcase from MB and it leaked as soon as it was installed.
I am using AMSOIL synthetic tcase oil.
Who knows how long it sat on the shelf with the rubber seals not “seasoned”. Still, I don’t get a puddle on the floor.
