30 mm v. 50 mm spring spacers

Hi everyone,

I have read through discussions on spring spacers: 30, 40, 50 mm. Anyone have anything new to add? Problems with 50 mm? I read something somewhere about issues with 50 mm--problem with caster angle, driveability/wandering/more wear and tear? Thoughts? I'll be running 33 inch tires. Having smashed my the bottom of my truck/running boards a few times on AZ 4x4 trails, I'd prefer the extra height of the 50, but I don't want to cause other problems, so I'm open to 30 if 30 doesn't create problems but 50 does.

Thank you for your input!

The less lift the better IMHO.  Removing the running boards and installing sliders would improve your off road ability.  With the lockers you can slide over obstacles and still retain the great factory handling.

Desert Fox did you have to change any computer settings to go with a 33" tire. I'm getting tires next week and I'm trying to decide on the size. I'm curious if I'm going to have problem with gearing/ECU, etc.

Nathan,

It would be most helpful is you would go into your My Profile and complete the sections with the year and model of your G, as well as where you're located. That info helps us to get to know and to help you better.

Hi Nathan,

I had the tires installed at the dealer. They did not mention changing computer settings nor is it mentioned in the service record.

Universal joints do not have unlimited rotational angles and the joints do form a wear pattern that will be disturbed at higher "new" normal operating angles which might lead to early replacement. Spicer has some good info on this along with some nice calculators. As you change lift you will be changing rotational angle, aka articulation angle. Too much angle and you risk inducing vibrations or worse, failure. I recall folks considering double cardan joints if the calculations indicated for it.

Just some things to consider. Enjoy your adventures.

Re: 30 mm v. 50 mm spring spacers

Thanks, everyone. Finally got my 2 inch spring spacers installed. Love the look and the ride. Thought it might get sloppy on the highway, but to the contrary, it was very pleasant to steer and an appreciably smoother ride. Will test offroad in the coming months. Also will post a pic at some point.
