Milage increase

Recently I had a set of 2002 8" wide wheels powder coated to match my G.
I removed the factory 9 1/2" wide wheels with a set of tires that I had lost favor with.
The factory tires only has 15K on them but were not giving the performance I wanted.
I put a set of Mitchelin's on the wheels.
Total cost was $500 for the powder costing and $400 for the tires and wheels that were take off's at my buddies car lot.
Well, I had been experiencing milage in the range of 12 mpg city and 17 mpg highway with the factory 9 1/2s.
Yesterday my son drove it 213 miles highway.
I filled the tank this morning with 9.5 gallons.
That is 22 mpg and I am amazed.

Re: Milage increase

Well, I guess I had to back up and try over.
The milage was correct, the gallons were correct.
Then a few days later I made the same trip and recorded only 17 MPG.
Can it be that my son is the bette driver?

Re: Milage increase

Variations in headwind/tailwind and or following another vehicle can make a huge difference. The larger the vehicle the better, but following anything makes a big difference. Following sprinter vans are my favorite here in Germany.
