Paint Job

I've had my G320 for nearly 20 years, and the Florida sun has taken it's toll on the paint. I'm guessing that many of you have already gone through this refresh process, I'm not planning on changing the color, but do want a quality results.

How much should I expect to spend?

If anyone has any recommendations here in Florida, that would be appreciated too.

Re: Paint Job

G’s of your vintage were painted with Herbert’s paint.
Herbert’s got acquired by DuPont circa 1999 and merged into Axalta Coatings sometime later. Talk to Axalta and see who they can recommend for your area.

You need someone with a real paint booth and who demonstrates excellent moisture control equipment for the air lines the spray guns run off of.

Re: Paint Job

I just had mine fully repainted... but it was approached more like a restoration... all trim and plastic removed, any rust found and treated.

Checked and treated around the sunroof.
Rain gutters and running board endcaps repainted.
Sealed the seems throughout the bodywork at the rear.
Fresh rubber boots for the wiring going into the doors and rubber boots for rear door hinges.
Underbody generally rust treated.
Door window lists were all pulled out and treated, and I think all the the lower window trims (which screw in I think) were replaced because they were pretty rusted out.

Initial quote was for around 12k, which he warned was probably low... cost me 15k euros in the end (here in Germany). That's not including that I changed out all the light fixtures myself so they are fresh/new. It was painful to spend that kind of money, but it looks absolutely brand new, which is great!!!

Re: Paint Job

I've done the complete right side, hood and fenders, around windshield, and recently did a full rear end resto to address recent body damage and fix any significant defects. Lucky there is no significant body rust, just some small spots on the seams and superficial paint defects. Every time, I'm just happy to get it done and relish being able to own the best generation of G-class, 1996-2000. I got my G with 82 k miles and am almost at 100 more over the last eight years. I'm sure I'll be restoring it again in the years to come.

Re: Paint Job

In response to the OP, I would say$10-12K for a full repaint with glass out and trim off for prep. It may save a little bit if you can do the glass and trim yourself. Even more if you can find a guy to free lance the surface prep, then just take it to a spray shop to paint and buff. Most of the work is in the prep.

RE: Paint Job$1

I got a few quotes, generally around the $10k mark.  Low as $8k, north of $15k on the high end.

I decided to paint it myself and paid $1400 all in, using BASF Diamont solvent based base coat and DC92 high solids clear coat. Didn't feel like ponying up the extra $'s for Glasurit.

Re: Paint Job

Maybe Karl will chime in as he went from a black G to a white G.

Re: Paint Job

I'm pretty sure Karl had his painted in La Paz, Mexico. Definitely less expensive down there, but a long drive for most of us.
Tijuana is less costly than the US, but more expensive than La Paz AFAIK.

RE: Paint Job

A while back I had a car similar condition as yours. I removed the plastic, sanded it myself, replaced bent parts with wrecking yard parts. Then I rang paint stores and asked what colors were on the shelf for too long. Bought 2-pack top quality paint in bottle green for $50. Enough to do the car with a lot left over. Then cruised paint shops to find one needing a filler job. $600 including final taping. No the greatest job - a bit of orange peel, but a G is not a show car. $10-12 K is either show work or preying on the ignorant.

RE: Paint Job

I looking for something in the $3000 range. I don't mind doing some of the prep work myself, especially removing the trim and accessories. I was planning on visiting some of the local car shows and see who they are using...
