I'm not sure if your truck is affected, but many 1995 MBs were afflicted with the biodegradable wiring harness problem (I know the M114 was). If your is, that may be why you are in limp home mode.

Re: 1995 290gd computer reset

Ok well I am too far from a star part and I hope that the harness isn't biodegradable but certainly there must be a easy no tool reset for this
Thankyou

Does it stay in the LHM when you restart the engine? If yes, the STAR is your only alternative. Find an Indie shop that has it.

Another thing to try would be to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes. Reconnect it and see if the LHM is still active. If yes, see my first sentence in this reply.

Re: 1995 290gd computer reset

I thought the 1995 290GD was still a naturally aspirated fully mechanically controlled motor and injection pump. Like a stroked hydraulic valve version of the 300GD.

Is there a data plug under the hood and an electronics cable going to the IP?
Maybe you can post your VIN fpr clarity.

Re: 1995 290gd computer reset

A search for 1995 290GD pulled up a youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Fb4wQr16cI) of a vehicle that definitely seemed to be mechanical injection.  Also, based on the injection line routing, looked like a rotary pump.

If so, these suffer from water damage if a water trap isn't installed in the system.  Water gets into the pup, but can't exit.  Sloshing around in the bottom of the pump, it eats away at the regulating system.  The symptom is lower and lower top end power.  Eventually, all it can do is idle.  It starts up just fine, but can't move.  If that is the problem, the cure is a new injection pump.

Re: 1995 290gd computer reset

I had a 290GD but I don´t remember that it had any computers. There were some relays for central locking and window wipers but that´s it.

What are the symptoms? How do You know that it is in a limp mode? Is there any limp mode/check engine light on? Can You post the VIN of the vehicle?

I think that any of the STAR systems will do it.  You just need the 16 pin adapter cable that goes to the main (bread loaf shaped) box.

Echoing a previous request ... how do you know for sure that it is in limp mode? The 290GDT that I worked on had an ECU that managed the volume and timing of the rotary pump.  Even with significant damage to the pump, it still ran well.  The internal damage severely limited the max power output though.

Re: 1995 290gd computer reset

Tom Sheppard had a 290GDT that went into limp mode in the desert in Algeria. He had to drive it all the way back to Munich in automatic trans second gear to get it fixed! Turns out he had the biodegradeable wiring harness on his motor, it was a 2000 MY stock 290GD turbo. He sold it a few years later.
