WIS shows it being very easy, lock steering wheel and remove two bolts, upper and lower from shaft and, remove and slide on new boot. On the W463 does the shaft need much effort to pry off?

Note that the bolts have to come all the way out. The joint is designed so that the bolt, even if loose, prevents separation.

My boot was totally ripped in back at the firewall. I am not sure how water did not get in when I was fording in a creek this past summer.

You should check out this thread, I just added some photos and my steps. http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.asp?tid=23797 To directly answerer your Q I needed to use light tapping, about as much as would be needed to drive a nail in sheetrock.
