Desperate for advice on G550 AC issues

Hi everyone, I'm new to this community and I bought my 2009 G550 last year to cope with the pandemic. To get straight to the point, my AC works well 80% of the time. The other 20% it works intermittently where it doesn't blow out cold air. I'm taking it to my mechanic to check for leaks but I have a sneaking suspicion that it might be the evaporator which I pray isn't the case. I've noticed that twice last week when I first turn on my car (with the AC on) I feel a slight burning sensation. It's nothing major, but enough to take notice. I hope it's the AC compressor since I had an identical situation with my w221 s550 where the AC worked intermittently and installing a new compressor solved the problem. However the only difference is I didn't get a burning sensation from the AC vents. What is the best way to determine if the problem is the evaporator without dismantling the dashboard?

Also, my Mercedes mechanic isn't the most familiar with the G Class. Does anyone know of any G class experts in Southern California? Thank you everyone!

You could use a freon leak detector to "sniff" the drain from the evaporator under the truck. If you have dye already in the system you might be able to see it with a detector light (black light type).

Not sure where in SoCal you are, I really like MBZ Motors in Winnetka. If you're in OC, a fellow Europa owner just had some AC repairs done at Five Star Autocare in Newport. No experience personally, but Classic Center suggested them.

It's probably something simple a shop will be able to figure out easily. Intermittent cold air sounds like maybe your front fan(s) aren't working- but most AC issues are way over my head.

Start simply... Don't worry about the leaks yet.
The AC Drier has a glass window. Start the truck with AC running at full speed and look into the glass window. If it's cloudy, add more Freon. Add just enough until the glass window clears up.

When you say "burning sensation", does this mean the heat is coming out the vents intermittently?

I live in a very hot state and had a devil of a time figuring out why it would not blow cold enough. Turned out the two auxillary fans on the radiator had quit working. As soon as I replaced this all was well.

Years ago I rigged a switch that would bypass the thermostat and manually turn the aux. fans on. It's great for those hot Florida summer days.

BTW, I often visit Charleston to see my Citadel friends and alumni.
