jdc1244 Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | The Plan I’m off work this week so I’m going to get the 300 SE fixed up. Over the winter I got all the stuff under the sheet metal squared away – new ATF and filter, brake pads, filters, coolant, AC, etc, and now it’s time to move to the outside. I have a pair of Depo Euros that dropped in my lap for $25 so I could not pass that up. They’ll do until I can find a set of decent Bosch lamps. I have a second set of CLK rims like I have on the 500 SEL. I’ll be putting new tires on Monday and installing the new rims and tires on the 300 SE. I’m going to get the paint for the grill and some paint for the DOT wipers and lug bolts. I saw a 126 here with fresh paint on the DOT wipers with Euros recently and thought it looked very good. Perhaps my aversion to my DOT wipers is due to the fact that they’ve faded. Question: what color should I paint the DOT headlight wipers? White – same as the car? Black – same color as the grill? Grey – the original color. To be honest I’m really tired of the way the front of this car looks. The plastic part of the headlight assembly is discolored and the grill has faded to almost white. I’d like it to look as nice on the outside as it does on the inside. Thanks for any input. (300 se beach.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 300 se beach.jpg (32KB - 3 downloads)

Which part of the grille is faded the plastic or the chrome. If the black is faded paint it black and perhaps install some more chrome strips. Some clear corners might look nice too. If you want to go all out you could even paint the entire car while but that might be overkill. Car looks good now sure it will look even better no matter what you do.

jdc1244 Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: The Plan I'm am planning for the 'clean look' with the Bosch lamps but after seeing this fellow’s nicely painted wipers I though painting would be a good stop-gap. The grill chrome is still shiny but the plastic grill screen is faded and with no contrast with the white paint makes it look rather drab. I’m going to leave the DOT turn indicators for now as well because I’d like some dark amber Euro turn indicators. Yes, thanks, the car is presentable now but the DOT headlights have got to go. This is what I’d eventually want it to look like: (83 380 se.JPG) Attachments ---------------- 83 380 se.JPG (21KB - 3 downloads)

It's good you have some euro eyes to go on it, as for wiper arm colour, white would be my choice I think wipers are a great looking feature (DOT one's included), it's amusing to see people 'trip-out' over a car with headlight wipers - keep 'em Also, if you can get the glass lenses off the euros you should paint the plastic bezel inside the unit silver I have done all mine in a 'chrome effect' silver paint, it really helps freshen up the front end Edited by nomad 7/3/2006 1:36 AM

jdc1244 Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: The Plan I got the new tires on the rims and the paint. Snag: I knew the second gen calipers were larger than the first gen but I didn't know how large. The front rims need a 5 mm spacer for the center cap to clear the hub grease cap and that seems to help clear the calipers. So I need to look at spacers for the rear as well. This could get complicated if I need a spacer larger than 5 mm for the rear. (...sorry you asked?)

Geez so glad I thought to speak up! But seriously, the grille will look much sharper once you've painted the mesh. Charcoal Grey? Black? And of course I vote for clear corners...

jdc1244 Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: The Plan As they say in the UK the plan is knackered. The parts store that carries the spacers I need are out of said spacers. I put the spacers from the front on the back and that seemed to work. The spacers are currently on order. So I have the old rims back on. Dealing with all this left me no time for the painting and such. Thursday I'm off to Destin to see the parents and pick up and drop off a son. I think I'll go with the grey for the wipers. It will get done, just need to be patient. Thanks for the input and keep the suggestions coming.

jdc1244 Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: The Plan Got the Euro lights installed this weekend and I’m very pleased; painted the lamp wipers as well. I can see now how ugly my DOT lights were – not just due to the inherent ugliness of the DOT lights but due also to the discoloration of the plastic parts of the assembly. And this is not just a cosmetic issue, I do some predawn driving once a week and the poor quality of the DOT lamps makes for stress while driving. With fall and winter coming and the days getting shorter, the better quality lights will be more in need. The stock H4 bulbs do a great job and case a more than adequate amount of light on the road. Painting the grill screen black will be later this year, when it’s cooler and the humidity is low to ensure it drying faster. Yes, for the passenger side lamp I’ll need to fabricate some type of bracket for the bottom of the lamp. The driver side secured with one bolt to the wiper motor mount. The passenger side is resting on the top of the motor only. I’m also going to remove the motors altogether when I paint the grill screen and replace the under light panels with solid ones.
